It is possible that you have a faulty firewire port or cable that is sending electricity through one of the pins that is not designed to handle it. If one of the six pins at one end of a cable is bent, for example, it can electrocute whatever is at the other end.

The DV/Firewire cable looks like this:
The smaller one (4-pin) is the camcorder side. In iMovie 08+, make sure you "Import from Camera", not Movies.
