Question about Sony KP-53V80 53" Rear Projection Television

5 Answers

Top, bottom, and sides of screen are blurry

I think my sony KP-53v80 has some sort of convergence problem. The middle of the screen looks great, but the outside edges are blurry. I purchased a service manual because I saw many people mention a grid to fix convergence problems, but I didn't mess with any of the settings because I'm not entirely sure what to do. I called a repairman and he said it would be over $300 to fix...something about a board that may need to be replaced. Would I be able to fix or replace the board myself if that is the problem? I repaired circuit boards for a few years for work, so I figured it can't be too hard. Can anyone help me?

How can I check if one of the lamps has blown?

Can it be fixed with the remote? If not, what board, ICs, and/or fuses would need to be replaced and where can I get them?

Hello there,
Being a practical technician I would assist you technicaly.
Please find G-Board in your TV and replace IC1502 & IC1506 (STK392-150)
Before replacement of above said ICs, check follwoing Fuses (PS1501-1502-1503-1504-1505 & 1506) all are 2A rating. If you have VOM (Volt Meter) then confirm +15Volt & -15Volt supply on G board. If you need further help, I can provide with pictures of related circuit portion.

You should replace both of your STKs 392-120s.these are your convergence ics , I always replace with 392-180s better ics.
This will fix your problem.

Check your service manual to find the location of these ICs. You should also check the low value resistors that are connected to the ICs as well.

Perform service convergence setup procedure

It is a typical convergence problem. Start performing convergence setup procedure, illustrated in service manual.
if you still get the problem, it means that probably one of the two convergence ICs has blown, in this case the repairman must test the fuses at the base of the ICs and replace the defective IC.
If your tv has a separate convergence board you can replace the whole board (part cost $60/$100).
Check also that is not just one of the lamps that has blown, that will be easier to fix.
Leave the tv unplugged for over 30 minutes before servicing it, do not work with live electricity unless you are an expert technician.

There may be an open fuse. The typical fuse for the application is a 3-amp, and may not look anything like your typical fuse. If you have sucessfully replaced the parts that you indicated, the convergence should be very close to what it was before the failure. The fuse may look like a small rectangle of black or white plastic with a wire through it.

I have a sony kp-41t65 tv acting like computer screen out of whac

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Blurry screen?

there are 3 things that will make your tv go blurry, the focus and screen control assembly , the high voltage splitter and the horizotal transformer and that is only if all three tubes are blurry.if only one tube is blurry, more than likely the tube itself is bad.

Selective "non-convergence" issues

Sounds like to may have a yoke loose on a tube. If it's not that, you may have somehow damaged the convergence board. Look for any cracks in the board. If you find any, solder across the beaks and it should be fine. Good luck and I hope this has helped in some way
