Question about E-Machines T2742 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I was given an emachine T2742, I turned it on and it worked for a little while and then went off by itself. I can hear and see the fan running. It will not come on but will continue to try to start. Above the power line there is a red button with 115 on it. I can not locate any green light for the motherboard.

The computer will start and than immediatly shut off. It will continue to cut off and on but won't stay not long enough to do anything.

After running can you feel any heat around the CPU heatsink? Does the CPU fan run at all?
Is it trying to restart and then looping back to reboot?

Try to access the Bios (press Del as soon as it switches on) see if you can get to the bios screen, see how long it will stay in the Bios screen before switching off or rebooting. If the bios has a hardware monitor, see what the temp of the CPU is. 30 degrees to 40 degrees is normal

Then switch off, unplug the Optical drives, the hard drive and floppy drive in turn, try to reboot and see if it is stable with just the hard drive installed.

IF the CPU heatsink remains cool after all that, the issue is with a dead CPU or a blown component on the motherbiard

Just clarify something for me. You mention the power line with115 on? Do you mean the back of the PSU? where there is a switch to set the AC voltage to 230 or 115 volts?
If you are in the UK this should be set to 230 volts. PLEASE CHECK THIS WITH SOMONE WHO IS COMPETENT WITH ELECTRICITY before changing anything!
If the PSU is running at 115 volts there may not be enough power to the board, but as I said, check this because setting the wrong voltage in the PSU can result in a rather loud bang and damage to the board

You answered my question. It is ok on the 115 because I am in the US. Don't play around with electricity. It is on the PSU. Just don't have any green light showing anywhere and was wondering if that had anything to do with it but guess not. Thanks for your answers

Sorry I couldn't help more.. suspect the motherboard or CPu have failed

Thank you, I was thinking it was the power box but guess not. Don't think it is worth fixing.
Have a great night and Happy New Years.

Are you sure it was the fan? Was there any type of clicking noise present? If so it points to your HDD... Also check to see if your video card is fully seated in its slot.

Louder whirring noise when turning on computer

trumpjd,
Usually on startup the fans work a little harder then slow down. On newer computers they still have noticable fan noise. Most of what ou hear while the machine is running after start up is the power supply fan. When it starts to go bad you'll hear it all the time.

Hi dallasblue08,

Here's a diagram of what your looking for:

The following eMachine models share the same motherboard (and thus the same front panel layout):

Emachine t2742 I also have a wiring problem!

gtater,
It's ironic that you ask me this question today-- i am just now carrying in another eMachine computer to fix. Anyway, unfortunately I do not have one that is the same model as yours (T2742). However, I did some quick research and found that yours has the same exact motherboard as the T2898 which I made the diagram for!

The following eMachine models share the same motherboard (and thus the same front panel layout):
T2742 T2796 T2798 T2824 T2885 D2823 T2862 T2896 T2898 T2958

For further reference, I would like to share this diagram for the eMachines T6544 in case someone else may need this model. This is the computer I just carried in... might as well share.

By the way, the power switch doesn't need to be oriented any particular way (positive and negative), which is why the switches are not labeled as + or -. Switches can be wired either way and they will work the same.

Hope this helps.

T2742 OEM Bios Update

I researched and could not find it. I suggest that you have a Chat session with the eMachine support @:

http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html

Or you can download BiosAgent and it will tell you what you need, but to download it, you would have to purchase it for a fee of $29.00. I download BioAgent and it told me what Bios and hardware updates I needed.

copy and paste the link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
