Question about Reliance Water Heaters

1 Answer

We are an Ace Hardware Store and we sold a water heater to a customer, and the sticker on the outside of the box that had the information for energy was discarded by us and now the customer wants the information. How can we get a copy of it faxed to us? It was a 55 gal electric water heater MFG# 6-50-DORT, serial #1023A000954.

Dort is Reliance.
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/prod/elec.html
6-50 Dort is 606 series

Your Customer wants energy factor.
Pdf below shows energy factor for 606 series:
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/lit/spec/electric/R606E0510.pdf
55 gallon has .90 energy factor.

4500 watt water heater costs about $48 per month with electric prices at 12 cents per Kwh
http://waterheatertimer.org/Figure-Volts-Amps-Watts-for-water-heater.html

Read about energy factor:
http://www.energysavers.gov/your_home/water_heating/index.cfm/mytopic=13000
"...energy efficiency based on the amount of hot water produced per unit of fuel consumed over a typical day. This includes the following:

  • Recovery efficiency - how efficiently the heat from the energy source is transferred to the water
  • Standby losses - the percentage of heat loss per hour from the stored water compared to the heat content of the water (water heaters with storage tanks)
  • Cycling losses - the loss of heat as the water circulates through a water heater tank, and/or inlet and outlet pipes." end quote
Energy factors exist so large appliances can be compared to small appliances.
-This is like comparing aircraft-carriers to small ships.
-The purpose is so large gigantic appliances look like reasonable energy alternatives, when that is not actually true.
-The aircraft carrier could have better efficiency number than smaller ship, and it gives misleading appearance that aircraft-carrier will save the consumer money. Many of the super high-consumption 80 gallon water heaters have higher energy factor, but they consume huge amounts of energy each time operated. Simple Dort series is a better value even with lower efficiency number.
-The efficiency number is only for a new product. There is no measure showing how long that product will maintain the efficiency rating.
-And lastly, the manufacturer is putting energy factor on the product, like writing your own performance review, so who can possibly double-check the energy factor.

Energy smart light stays green but no heat

Depends if you have new or old style energy smart.
Generally this can mean the control board is bad.

Link below has contact information for Craftmaster and Whirlpool and some troubleshoot resources:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Whirlpool-Energy-Smart-electric.html

Repairs are funneled through the manufacturer who profits by selling non-generic parts not available from local hardware store... with purpose to end DIY repairs, make more money for manufacturer, and build up network of brand-loyal repair service companies who can sign you up with a repair package ... under the banner of saving you $1 a month in energy cost.
Look at label located on side of water heater to find manufacturer and serial number.

If water heater is within 6-9 year warranty period, then parts are covered, but labor is not.
Manufacturer can send parts and/or refer you to local technician.

Water heater not making hot water

1) Electric water heater can be repaired, no need for new one.

2) Ordinary homeowner can turn 6-year electric tank into a lifetime tank.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-maintain-water-heater.html

3) If you replace heater, then buy inexpensive tank-type from local box store, and use coupon or offer 10% off. Read the product manual.
Avoid tankless at all costs unless you are rich.
No need to buy expensive water heater on the promise of thicker insulation or higher energy factor, or 'lifetime elements' or 'advanced technology', any other slicker promotion aimed at folks with the promise of a golden rainbow of money-saving-bliss if only you would spend more money. All costs are energy. Expensive water heaters do not pay back, and 1 repair will dissolve all anticipated savings. And expensive heaters can never be maintained to last as long as ordinary tank-type electric.

Water heater heats water and then cuts off. I replaced the lower element with a guaranteed for life element. It still heats up and cuts off. There is a control box on top that allows for an easy reset. ...

1) Bad thermostat or thermistor depending on model.
Whirlpool/Craftmaster/American energy smart has control box on top, and you can order parts from Whirlpool.

2) Copy following links to help identify product.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html

3) Add a comment with more detailed information:
You have electric water heater.
Unknown brand, possibly energy-smart.
Unknown control box.
Cut off? Do you mean 'reset' is tripped?

4) Whirlpool energy smart requires 10 gauge wire and 30 amp breaker.
Control panel may not function with undersized electric supply.
Control panel has blinking-light errors ... if no error code then maybe the control box is bad.

I want to buy a new energy star 50 gal. gas tank hot water heater that will be trouble free (not like the PROMAX GVC) can you give me some suggestions on makes and models that are reliable, energy friendly...

Hi Chris.

My experience with water heater is like cars.
There are a few manufacturers making all the cars, and people sometimes get a bad one.
AO Smith, Bradford White, Rheem make most of the water heaters.
Each is shipping 150,000+ water heaters a month.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

Since all costs are energy, I suggest buying off-the-shelf tank-type water heater at local box store.
Sears, Ace, Home Depot, Lowes/ in no particular order.
The big manufacturers make box-store brands. All brands are good. The warranties are industry standard.
Stay away from blowers and electronics so you can maintain and repair the unit yourself with common, inexpensive off-the-shelf parts.
Install it yourself for around $330.
Adapt to the water heater. Read the manual and advisories. Do the maintenance so you are not disappointed.
Use the old tank as a staging tank for cold incoming water, or use it for DIY solar water heater:
Read the money-saving installation tips, plus a few maintenance tricks shown on following link.

Upvote the help.
And take advantage of fixya expert assistance live.
For a price, expert works with you while you work on water heater or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.

2 green flashes. hot water is blazing hot set at 120 degrees.have the energy smart unit model#ee2h50rd045v . what is wrong?

2 green flashes is 'High Water Temp.'
http://waterheatertimer.org/Whirlpool-Energy-Smart-electric.html

Typical energy smart manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Whirlpool-energy-smart-electric-manual.pdf

3 flashes is Temperature Sensor failure.
4 flashes is Upper element
5 flashes is Lower element

Troubleshoot section says:
1) Make sure access doors and insulation are installed.
2) Check elements for resistance of 5-25 ohms (if element has a short in center of element, it might not trip breaker)
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-element.html
3) replace element and reset control system.
Buy ordinary 4500 Watt element from hardware store.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-water-heater-element.html

4) I also suspect the self-diagnostic control box.
Manual says: Repair parts may be ordered through your plumber,
local distributor, home improvement center, or by calling
1-877-817-6750.
You need serial number, product number and model number from label on side of tank.

Whirlpool Energy Smart Water heater - light is solid green then every now and then blink a couple of times then go solid again. What does this mean?

2 flashes = high water temperature (the water heater comes set at 120, and you can set it lower or higher)
3 flashes = sensor failure (temperature sensor similar to a thermostat on regular water heater)
4 flashes = upper element
5 flashes = lower element
Links below are for Whirlpool manuals
http://www.whirlpoolwaterheaters.com/support/Manuals.aspx
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Whirlpool-energy-smart-electric-manual.pdf

The water heater is working right now.
If the elements go out, they are available at any hardware store.
The temperature sensor is easily replaced and can be ordered from Whirlpool.
You might want an extra temperature sensor on-hand so repairs are not delayed.
Link below shows the product in detail.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Whirlpool-Energy-Smart-electric.html
Let the water heater do its job until it fails.
