You nee to install wordperfect in order to view that file. or have the sender resend it as a .doc file.

Cant open some of my downloaded file. need 2007 version

Hi, MS Word files have .doc extension (Word 97-2003 Format). Since launch of MS Office 2007, the files have the extension .docx. These files can be opened with earlier versions of MS Word (97, 2002, 2003 etc) by installing the compatibility pack, which is available at Microsoft Official Site. It is not at all necessary to Buy/ Install Office 2007 for opening such files. Visit the above link, download the compatibility pack/ converter and enjoy!
Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.
Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya! CreativeTECH

I am unable to open any of the attached files

You must identify the file extension of the file, example if its resume.odt, odt file extension will works only for open office application. It is important to identify the file extension so that you will know what kind of program or application you are going to use. Have a nice day.

What is the meaning of X in the word DOCX?

The X stands for XML (Extensible Markup Language), which is the programming language behind the scenes in Office 2007 programs.
Previous versions of Word were based on binary data. Binary data is, by nature, prone to corruption, and "bloated."
By changing the background code, Microsoft was able to create new tools and features in Word 2007 that would not have been possible otherwise.

Someone emailed me a file in wps How can I read those?

A Works 7.0 .wps converter is supplied with Word 2002 (Office XP) and Word
2003 (Office 2003), but you probably need to install it by clicking on Start
| Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Microsoft Office | Modify |
Add/Remove Features. A Works 6.0 .wps converter for Word can be downloaded
from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318244 .

Converters for Works
3.0/4.0/5.0 can be downloaded from Word MVP Graham Mayor's website
http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm (scroll about half-way down the page to
the File Converter Downloads section).

When trying to open an Excel attachment thru Outlook 07, I get this error message: The system cannot find the specified file

Two possible issues: The file extension may be missing from the file and Excel has issues opening a file directly from the e-mail attachment.

It is always a best practice to download the attachment before trying to open it.

Save the file to your comptuer and verify the file has a 3 digit extension on the end. .XLS an Excel 2003 and lower extension - .XLSX is Excel 2007 extension.

Opening an attachment from an e-mail places the file in a TEMP directory on the hard drive and Excel may have issues saving your changes because of this.

Save the attachment and then open it with Excel. That way, the changes you make will be saved, you will know where the file is and you will not lose your work.

Office is not free.

You can, however, get Open Office which is a FREE suite of programs that allow you to open Office documents.

You can download it from www.openoffice.org

Thanks for using Fixya.

It looks like a problem with file associations. The computer maintains a list of file extensions and the programs that will open files with such extensions.

<grin> Had this problem years ago and it really frustrated me.
- Open the Control Panel - Open Folder Options Click on File Associations tab
Go down to the .doc extension listing and . . . change it to Word or WordPad if you don't have MS Word installed.

Call Microsoft and explain the situation, have a magnifying glass handy to read the tiny engraved lettering in the center of the CD disk.
If you have some kind of sales receipt, or other "Proof of Purchase" have it handy too.
You will need to tell them, you do not have the program installed on other computers.
They can mail a new copy for you.
This method will only work if you have a legal copy
