Question about Sirius Starmate ST2 Satellite Radio Receiver

3 Answers

My ST2 just died. Still picks up all the channels fine but just doesn't output any sound through the 1/8'' minijack. I've only been using it for 5 yrs on my home system, no car, no boom box dock etc. Sirius tech support went though all the steps wt me but concluded it was probably a burned out amp and I needed to buy a new radio. Is there ANYONE that does "unofficial" repairs of these things? I know its gotta be just some stupid little thing that powers the minijack.

This could be because of an amp, or it could just be a bad solder joint. Unfortunately, it's impossible to find an amp to replace it because sirius does not release a schematic. So, most likely it's irreparable.

If you would like to see if it's a bad solder, just leave it near a heater and plug it in. If it works, that should tell you that you should reflow your radio. Reflowing is easy, just remove the circuit board from the plastics and heat it up to 800-1000 degrees F with a heat gun. Let it cool and reassemble.

Honestly, I wouldn't attempt because there is a possibility that it is unsolvable. Try the reflow yourself, it's easy. The xbox heat gun reflow tutorials on youtube are a good reference.

I had the Jack start to go. I had a similar problem with the 12v dc power in Jack that was fixed with a bit of solder. I attempted this on the output Jack and had small success. I happened to have an non activated ST2 unit in better shape. Since mine has a lifetime script and I love the unit for many reasons I tried something that appears to have worked.
Inside the case there are 2 circuit cards. One is the receiver (UMA-ST2R). It has the antenna Jack. This was still working. The radio card (UPA-ST2) had the worn jacks also the display and buttons etc.
I swapped the receiver card (lower one in pic) and all worked when I plugged it in and that was it. All channels in a newer case and radio. Four screws on the case and three on the card. Find one on eBay and a small Philips screw driver and problems should go away.

My ST2 just died. Still picks up all the channels - c0c40980-c497-4e53-ae4a-8971ffa5df87.jpg

Having problems connecting using RCA cables (TV to Sound Bar) - No sound on Sound Bar

I assume by using your phone (cable rca to mini jack) the sounbar functions normal. Next time give more info like tv and soundbar make and model no and what connections are available on both components and if its input or output connections.

On the tv make sure the rca cable (tv to soundbar) is plug into the stereo output of the tv and not in a av input. Some tv's have a mini jack out and not rca. Some have a earphone socket which could also be used.

Some tv's only have a digital or optical output port. Iin basic sound work and can be connected with the following combinations .

Minijack to minijack
Minijack to rca
rca to rca
digital to digital
optical to optical

Try changing the emitter resistors near the parts you've replaced. Also when you change out transistors it's a good idea to change them ALL out..The "supposedly good" ones may be badly stressed.
If the output line to the spkr relay has more than a volt on it the amp will stay in Protect

Input 1 is an INPUT so you can't connect external speakers there and get sound from the television, which is what you are attempting.

Your two choices are the 3.5mm minijack hole that says AUDIO OUT terminal, which is under the Ethernet Terminal and the DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT terminal, which is under Input 7. If your external speaker system does not have a 3.5 mm minijack input to accept the 3.5 mm minijack cable then this isn't going to work. There are cables where one end is a 3.5 mm minijack and the other end is an RCA so you can try that and it MIGHT work. Other than that the Sharp televisions are known for not carrying sound over the fiber optic cables consistently so even if you bought a fiber optic cable and connected it between the digital audio output and a speaker system or sound bar there is no 100% guarantee it'll work. It is worth a try anyways.
