You have to go to (winkey)- xto get to the Windows Mobility Center and in the function key row, select Function Key instead of Multimedia key. This should reverse the Fn problem.

Go to this link and download the necessary files you need including the BIOS and Quick set files:http://support.dell.com/support/download...

Click "Drivers Home" when you get to the page.

I have updated both BIOS and QuickSet files, but still the function key won't work on any of the buttons.

Try the "On Screen" keyboard and check the function keys. To access it, do a search at the Start button. Or try an external keyboard - let me know what you find.

I tried the On Screen keyboard and still doesn't work, when i push ctrl or shift or alt on the laptop keyboard the on screen keyboard lights those keys up, but when i push fn the on screen keyboard does nothing. Does this mean that the fn key is broken?

I think it's the operating system - Windows 7. Continue to update through "Windows Update" - eventually they will have a fix.

For some reason, some genius at Dell reversed 30 years of PC history and made the Function Keys (F1 - F12) not work unless the blue Fn key on the bottom row are clicked with it. Now it's very easy to knock out your wireless by hitting the F2 key accidentally. WHY???? HOW CAN THIS BE REVERSED? rommelalilin... it's ALL the keys unless you hit Fn at the same time.

  • blooomooon May 18, 2011

ALL FUNCTION KEYS DON"t WORK, ROMMELALILIN --- unless you hit the Fn key at the same time. Some "genius" at Dell reversed 30 years of PC history by making the function keys inoperable unless you hit the blue Fn key at the bottom. And if you hit the F2 key, not only doesn't it function as F2 as it should, it knocks out the wireless adapter. How could this have gotten past engineering? I spent 40 minutes with cable company support before we figured out what was going on. Now the question is, is there any way to reverse this "feature"?

Unlock the mouse in dell inspiron m5030

1) Examine your "Function"/"F" keys and look for a touchpad icon. If you find one, hold the "Fn" key and press the touchpad icon button to unlock the touchpad. Move on to Step 2 if your laptop doesn't support this feature.

  • 2) Plug a USB mouse into an open port on your laptop. Click the Windows "Start" button. Click "Control Panel" in Windows XP and double-click "Device Manager." Type "Device" in the search box in Vista and Windows 7 and click "Device Manager" from the results.
  • 3) Click "+" next to "Mice and other pointing devices." Right-click the touchpad and select "Enable." Your touchpad is now unlocked.

Can the dell inspiron m5030 work with a projector

You can switch to anexternal monitor by two methods.1. Connect the externalmonitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and thelaptop. The video information will automatically switch to the externalmonitor.2. If you power up thelaptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor bypressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make andmodel laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCDscreen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fnkey plus one of the function key. Here is a list of keycombinations for some of the laptops :-IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7HP and Compaq = Fn + F4Toshiba = Fn + F5Dell = Fn + F8

There is a BIOS update available from Dell that is supposed to cure this problem.

Bios updates can be found @:

I solved the problem by using up my battery until the the screen would black out. Afterwards, I rebooted it (again without using AC adaptor) and the system warned me of low battery and to press F1. After pressing F1 I plugged the adaptor back and tried rebooting. The problem was solved
