Question about Memorex MVUC821 8 in. Under Cabinet TV

1 Answer

I have a Memorex MVUC821 8" TFT DVD Player. Upon power on, the red standby light turn green. The unit checks to see if a dvd is the player and then cycles the dvd player since not disk is present and does not proceed to turn on the tv portion of the unit.

    Hi walesarumi,

I looked for defective electrolytic capacitors and I could not see
any. I am an electrical engineer so I have some experience. Are there
any voltage points I could measure to confirm that the voltage is lower
than expected? I disconnected the power to the dvd drive but then the
unit did not continue to operate. I assume that the dvd drive is a
large current consumer and if it was not present, more current would be
available for the rest of the unit. Is there a way I could trick the
unit so it thinks that the dvd drive is present (but not) so the unit will function as a tv?

    Hi,

    Regarding http://www.fixya.com/ThreadPage3.aspx?th...
., The unit has a separate power supply. Disconnected from the unit, it supplies 12 v as the label indicates. Connected to the unit, it still supplies 12 v so I do not think the problem is supply related.

    Hi,

I sent you a response to your suggestion concerning my Memorex MVUC821. Your suggestion did not apply. Do you have any other thoughts?

You told that my power supply most likely failed and that this might be confirmed by examining the electrolytic capacitors to see if any has swelled. If so, they should be replaced.

The power supply for the unit is separate and that all the electrolytic capacitors on the pc boards appear to be fine. I had also measured the voltage from plug-in wall power supply under load and no load and measured 12 dc volts which was the labeled voltage on the power supply.

The problem with the unit is that the tv does not come on, picture or sound. When the power button is pressed, the unit goes from standby mode (red light on) to on (red light off and blue light on) and the built in dvd drive makes a sound from a periodic motion it makes. Unplugging the power cable to the dvd drive naturally stops the dvd activity but the unit does not continue by turning on the tv.

Hello,

The issue you describe is consistent with a power supply board issue. This is the board where the AC goes to. This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.

The TV is receiving current but cannot circulate or transfer the current to other necessary part of the TV because of the defective power supply board.

I do not think it needs replacement, rather some defective capacitors are causing this issue.
Open unit up and take a look at the power supply board. You will probably see one or more electrolytic filter capacitors that are bulged up in the top-not perfectly flat like the others.

The value of these capacitors will be different, most likely they will be somewhere around-820 to 2200uF/25 V( or /10V sometimes)

You can replace them with same values but I would recommend the voltage rating to be higher(like 35V for an original 25V) for reliability purposes.

What happens is,these bulged top capacitors will cause a low and unfiltered DC voltage=main board will malfunction(the relay will keep clicking until the caps are holding enough charge to bring the voltage up over a threshold point).

You can buy these capacitors at any Fry's or Radioshack store or you can order them online at vendors like "mcmelectronics.com"(look for electrolytic capacitors).
After replacing these capacitor(capacitors) most likely the normal operation will be restored.

Note: There may be also some other causes for this symptom ,like a defective T con board ,or main board, but the bulged top capacitors are the most common cause for this issue.

If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you. Also, note that TV stores a lot of current, so wait a while before opening the TV back cover.

I hope this helps.

Compliments of the season.

DVD player won't turn on. The red standby light is on. But the player does not work. I've tried unplugging it for 30 seconds but no change

If you didn't have any or have a good power strip the internal power supply could have gotten damaged, if it is under warranty get it replaced. And make sure you have a power strip for electronics at a mininum.

Memorex dvd player standby light flashing

I work for Memorex tech support. Our phone number is 800-919-3647.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the problem you've described can't be fixed with troubleshooting. Your DVD player needs to be repaired. There is a part that has developed a defect and needs to be replaced. The problem is Memorex doesn't repair their DVD players, they simply replace them when a customer has a warranty claim. If your player is no longer in warranty (the warranty is 90 days from the date of purchase) please call the above number to see if your model qualifies for any out of warranty options. Getting the player repaired locally would cost far more than what you paid for it, and that's if someone could repair it without any replacement parts from Memorex.

I hope I've provided you useful assistance and that this information allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed from here. Please be sure to vote on my response. I hope I've earned a good rating from you today.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
