Sounds like flame sensor.try taking it out and polish with steel wool.flame sensor is a rod that is in flame with a single wire going to it.If there is no flame sensor, check limit switches, but they usually have to be reset when triped.high limits usually reset when cool.check flew for blockage if theres air conditioning, check a coil could be dirty.if every thing else is ok then control board is bad.real hard for nubies to diagnoise.

I have a Reddy heater 30-55,000 btu.. When lighting it I press in the initer for the recomended time but after I release it the flame goes out.. Can you tell me why?.

It seems as if you are not holding the igniter long enough after it fires, have you tried holding the igniter down for a few seconds more to allow the safety cut out to warm up, (Similar to the gas heaters, when ignited keep the flame going for the thermal coupling to heat up), If you do this and it still goes out the safety valve is faulty, but try holding it in longer before messing about with the coupling.

Spark plug fired,( Sears -30,000 BTU) starts and runs for approx. 30 seconds, then cuts off. The reset button does not reset for restart for about another 20 - 30 seconds. Then the unit will restart...

check and see if the heater has a high temperature limit switch. if it does it will shut the machine off until it cools down.. just replace it with a new one.

What makes the heater start up then cuts off after about 5 seconds with a little of kersone running out of the front of it

This is normal. It has a time limit to fire off. The heater will cut off if it does not light. It sounds like it is never lighting up. Check your ignition source. I am not sure if you have a spark plug type or a glow bar.

My central heating unit is in the attic of my 2bd/2bth house. I don't know its age. It's a gas unit, but doesn't have a constant pilot flame. Rather, the pilot is ignited electronically. The problem is...

You don't mention make or model so here is my guess as to how to thinkout the trouble of what ever is in your attic.

For some reason, your heater is mis-firing. Normally, I would expect 3 to 5 such events at which time the heater goes out on safety. The heater knows it is on safety but you don't until it gets cold in your house. When you turn the power off, wait the 30 seconds, turn it back on, the heater no longer knows it is on safety (memory cleared) so it fires. Your heater continues to fire until ? at which time it starts counting again to 3 or some number. At the max mis-fire number - it goes out on safety again ... repeat - turn it off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on - no memory and so forth.

Do you have a service contract or regular service man? Might be time to find one.

Reddy heater won't stay on

sounds like a Thermal Cut-off this is a small sensor that detects if the heater has ignited properly, sounds like this sensor has failed and the heater shuts off to prevent from gassing anyone
