There should be a clutch inspection plate on the bottom of the bellhousing, take that off and you should be able to fish them out.

My 8n tractor starter spins but does not engage flywheel. Any help with diagnosing or fixing much appreciated

sounds like the Bendix gear that throws out the gear to the fly wheel is not functioning OR the shaft that the gear rides on is gooped up preventing it from throwing out far enough.

Ford 8n starter: starter drive gear breaks after two or three starts

Sounds like your teeth on the ring gear / fly wheel are broken / chipped or damaged. Inspecting the ring gear = Take a long flat tip screw driver and place the tip in between the cogs at the highest point possible, having the driver at 9 & 3 O'Clock postions. Now pry up until you are at the 10 or 11 O'Clock positions, The flywheel will only rotate an inch or two. Make sure you are in neutral. This may take a few minutes but it's the only way you can inspect by your self.

Can not remove starter

You mean you cannont physically take it out. Is the starter drive bound up with the ring gear? If thats the case put the tractor in high gear and rock it by pushing on a rear tire to unstick the drive... Need more info.

The steering column shaft in my 1954 Ford 8N tractor broke and I need info on howe to fix it.

Not sure, but if it's a 1954 model, it's not an 8N. 8N was only built thru 1952.
But sounds like you will need a new steering shaft.

Ford 4000 starter only works when I hit it with a hammer. What does that indicate?

the bendix unit on the starter shaft is sticking. You need to pull the starter and clean the shaft up and lightly grease it so the gear can move out when you engage the starter. worst case scenario you may have a badly worn shaft and need to replace it with a new starter. hope this helps you...

Early Ford Farm Tracker- Clutch not engaging

Is it a 8N ford tractor or close to that?
Does the transmission grind or hard to put in gear if the clutch is left engaged while placing in a gear.......does it feel like the clutch is driving the transmission?
If so....there is a short drive shaft behind the transmission in the tractor which may have broken.
There's not much else that breaks in there.

In 3rd gear the front wheels shake on 8N ford Tractor

The quick easy answer is put your feet on the steering shafts just ahead of your feet when sitting on the tractor when driving at speeds causing the shimmy. This is what most people do.

The longer answer is a new or rebuilt steering box or possibly adjustment.

Some (most) boxes have play that cannot be adjusted tight even with a rebuild.
