Question about Printers & Copiers
I used the live chat feature on HP's website. They guy I talked to reminded me very simply that the disk I was using to try and install the printer software did not support Windows Vista, which i what my computer is operating. He gave me a website and I downloaded and installed the Vista version of the printer software. I works perfect now!
(I'm sorry I can't remember the software, but live chat is great and they should be able to give it to you right away if you ask for it. Or you could always google it)

I am betting that the instal disk that you have is not for VISTA(home basic) Download the VISTA driver and software then install printer with the downloads.
Link to VIsta (home basic=32 bit VISTA) driver for your model:

It sounds to me that you are trying to install an XP driver on a Vista System??? It is not compatible.
If you need the proper driver, get it here:

Win 7 has been very thoroughly reworked so those 'missing' files were probably never there. Go to the HP website and click your way to the product support page for your model. I'm fairly sure you will find and updated install program or at least new drivers compatible with Win 7.

SOURCE: i have faced a problem
This could be any number of things, personally I'd go with an updated driver installation, go to http://welcome.hp.com/country/uk/en/support.html and get an updated driver with software and try that, I'd be happy to bet that it should work (as long as you choose the one for the correct operating system!)
If it doesnt work then you have a problem with your registry (although this is uncommon and I'd be surprised) - have you used any form of 'registry mechanic/booster/repair'? - these seriously muck things up and you may need to system restore back to before you used the program if you have.
Anyway I'm sure its just the driver/software file, best of luck!
