    Hi Walesaruni

Thanks for the above, but I have tried updating the software and it hasnt worked as it falls at the first hurdle. The PC does not load any drivers and the GPS doesnt change from the homescreen of the garmin logo.

i have tried resetting (holding for 8-15 seconds) and nothing happens. It just sits on the garmin logo screen and every now and then flicks off and then back on again.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Ben

    hi

i tried that and it did give me a new message i hadnt seen which was 'system software missing' but when i downloaded the web updater it says some devices were found however the necessarry capabilities are missing (i imagine as there is no software on the device)

it says to switch it on then try again but this doesnt work.

any more ideas? thanks for your help with this by the way. appreciate it

Hello,

the problem is actually a software issue and since resetting does not solve the problem,I think updating the deice should solve the problem. Update is just like reinstall the system software of the unit and it might get things fixed.

To perform update, follow the below procedures;

1. Plug one end of the USB cable into your GPS and the other end into your desktop or laptop computer. The GPS device will load the appropriate driver automatically, and a message on your GPS tells you that it is connected to your computer via USB.

2. Open your Internet browser of choice and type in the following web address: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27

3. Download the appropriate version of the software for your computer (Windows or Apple) and Install the WebUpdater by following the wizard (accept defaults).

4. Click "Start," "Programs," "Garmin" and " WebUpdater" to update your firmware and your maps. Periodically check and make sure your software is current.

Good luck.

    Hello,

updating is the surest way of fixing this problem, but obviously, the problem is how to connect the GOS to a computer so that it would be recognized. But i have found a trick that might be help.

With the unit OFF, hold your right thumb on the Upper, Left part of the
screen and plug the USB plug from your computer into the back of your
GPS. The unit should boot up and stop at the screen where it shows a
little computer, wire, and little GPS. Your computer should now show the
GPS as connected. Only now you can pull your thumb from the screen.

Then use Webupdater to upload 4.40 to your GPS.

Hopefully, the above should be helpful this time around.

    Good luck.

Try a master reset and also check if the USB is loose in the back. If so, the battery will not charge and an external charger will not work.

Master reset is accomplished by holding the power switch to the left for 10 seconds. Also look to see if there is a reset flap area on the bottom where the label is.

Does your Garmin Nuvi 200 or 200W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 255W GPS unit.

I hope that helps.

Send it back to Garmin. The fault may be coincidental, but unless you fancy buying a replacement model it's worth seeing what Garmin have to say. It should only have been a straightforward battery swap, but if the technician forgot to wear an earthing strap it's entirely possible that a component suffered static discharge damage.

I've been holding back from sending my nuvi 770 in as the battery seems fine and I've often had problems with shoddy recall work on digital cameras and similar devices in the past.
