It must be related to Hard Disk space issue, O.S. Conflict, etc..

Could you please clarify? What is the space available C i.e. the boot drive? Are all the o.s. installed on one partition?

Latest Ubuntu will occupy 10GB of hard disk, Linux Desktop Edition will occupy at least 10GB on C drive or where it's installed and for windows xp, there should be 1.5GB hard disk space available. All together at least 30gb will occupy and will need another 1 to 2 gb space to run the O.S. This means you need to have a C drive space of 40 gb without any programs installed including the drivers or updates etc.... If you are going to install all the drivers for your system, then you'll need min 50gb to run all these O.S. without any program.

But it's not recommend to install multiple operating on this type of system. If I am right, this Netbook has Intel Atom processor with 512MB of Ram. At least it should have 1gb or more Ram installed to run the system, otherwise you'll definitely notice differences in Performance.

There are many more like graphics, virtual memory etc.. but I don't think that will help you with this issue.

It's also possible that Virus or Spyware/Malware is working in the background which hinders the system to boot slow..

You better uninstall Ubuntu or Linux and see what happens, you'll notice the improvements in performance.

If you wish to try in other way, you can upgrade the ram to whatever maximum size supported by your system.

Boot into Safe Mode with Windows xp and delete on of the Linux o.s.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck.

I will ask if i can download windows 7 on linux acer aspire 4738?there will be a problem?

there won't be any problem as far as Windows and Linux, but this is a fairly involved procedure. You'll first need to create a Windows partition on your hard disk in NTFS file system format. Otherwise,Windows might overwrite / erase your linux installation when Windows 7 installs.
make the windows partition the "Primary" or "Boot" partition.
When Windows 7 installs, it may ask if you want to delete the linux partition.Answer "NO" to this.
The next concern is which operating system will boot by default,Windows or Linux.
I had no problem doing this with Windows Vista, and whe Vista booted,it listed a choice of operating systems to boot, and I would select either Windows Vista or Ubuntu Linux.

Installed ubuntu 9.10 now can't boot XP. Black

Now that you have installed ubuntu which is linux did you make your pc able to do dual boot. It is possible you have overwriten some important files like master boot record while doing ubuntu installation. Most times blinking cursor means no hard drive or operating system. you can try poping in XP cd and try to do recovery if you have it. Also easiest would be if you could boot into safe mode and try to fix the issue by replacing missing or corrupt files.

What is grub error 17? how to fix it?

Its GRand Unified Bootloader used in Linux OS.
Normally you get this error when GRUB is not able recognise the partition from which you are trying to boot the system. Make sure the boot partition on your system is recognisable by GRUB (such as EXT3).

You can try to restore the GRUB using the LIVE CD
  1. Boot From Live CD
  2. Open Terminal Window
  3. type >sudo grub
  4. then type : find /boot/grub/stage1
  5. you'll get something like: (hd0, 1)
  6. then type : >root (hd0, 1)
  7. type: > setup (hd0)
  8. >quit
  9. >exit
Remove the Live CD and reboot the system.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

How to Install both XP and Linux?

Hi,
I would install XP 1st then Open suse or Ubuntu. When you install either of these linux OS's ensure you install to another partition other than the windows one. Both installation routines will allow you to format the drive to the linux ext2 format and automatically install a boot manager (usually GRUB) which will allow you to select the OS you wish to boot.

Dual Boot problem in Windows XP & VISTA

Don't try to edit the xp boot.ini or the vista bootloader. It only leads to other problems and headaches.
Try this first: Take note as to which drive has vista on it, put your vista installation cd in the drive and let it boot to the "installation window", then choose "repair", then "startup repair." Make sure you choose the drive that already has vista on it. Let that run and when it re-boots you should then be given a choice to boot to vista or "other windows".
There is also a (free) program called EasyBCD. Download that, read the directions and have at it.
If none of that works, you'll have to do a clean install. Install XP on one drive first, then Vista on the second drive in that order. The Vista bootloader will pick up the XP. However, XP is NOT forward compatible and will not recognize the Vista bootloader. Make sure that you don't have any flashdrives or media cards plugged in before doing the install.
Another approach would be to shrink the Vista volume, creat a new partition, then install Linux Ubuntu that partition. Linux will detect all of the OS's and create a boot menu. Unfortunately, you'll lose about 5 gigs to the Linux OS and it's swap partition, but then, you get to goof around with Linux :-)

You may have a conflict with the hardware. I have had installations fail because of this. You may want to use the Ubuntu live CD to boot into Ubuntu. If this works out for you, you should be able to install.

If you cannot boot into Ubuntu using the live CD, try booting into the CD using some special boot prompts. See this How To:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/BootPrompt-HOWTO.html

I find nolapic noapci noapic did the trick for me on my HP.
