The most common causes are the belt breaking or jumping off, or the motor going bad...

My dryer will spin when empty but not w/ clothes in it.

either the belt is slipping or the motor is bad and can't move a load of clothes.try this put some clothes in it,keep the door open and with one hand hold in the door switch, have someone push the start switch and with your other hand spin the drum to help it out,if it does spin like this most likely you have a bad motor.

The motore will run, but it is not spinning. The motor smells hot when it is running and not spinning.

Dryers have a drive belt that turns the clothes drum. If the belt breaks, the drum stops rotating. Then you need to replace the belt.
Here is a link to the belt.

Just moved into a house in Singapore with a Hoover D6786 dryer. It starts up and spins but repeatedly stops spinning after only 5-7 minutes. Clothes will not dry. What's up? Thanks for any help.

This is normally the sign that the electric motor start/run capacitor has gone faulty: the special motor start/run capacitor, usually around 4 to 10 uF / 450v, helps the motor during the stop/start sequences which require higher torques.

Maytag PYE2300AYW starts when I hold the button in, but will not stay started.

The motor will need to be replaced. There is a throw-out switch on the motor that keeps it running after you release the start button. These are generally easy to change, with the only hard part being taking the cover off and putting it back on. http://www.partstore.com/GetModel.aspx?MfgName=Maytag&BrandName=Maytag&ModelNumber=PYE2300ayw&PartCategoryName=&Keywords=motor Any of these motors listed will fit your unit.
