You may have to reset the router back to its "out of the box settings" unplug and there should be a small button on the back--you may need a paper clip

Here is how to reset your Linksys wireless router to the factory default settings in order to clear any existing properties.

  • Note: All your settings will be lost including WEP encryption information, MAC Address filtering information, and any SSID information you have entered. The router user name and password will revert to the default of admin as the user name and no password.

To reset your Linksys BEFW11S4 router to the factory default settings:

  1. Hold the reset button on the back panel of the Linksys router for 30 seconds. All your settings will be lost including WEP encryption information, MAC Address filtering information, and any SSID information you have entered. The router password will revert to the default of Admin and all user name information will be removed.

My LINKSYS as for password, it is locked

Press and hold the reset button of the Linksys router using a pointed object (like a paper clip or pen) for 30 seconds.

The reset button is located in the back of the Linksys router closest to an Ethernet port.

The button is recessed to protect you from accidentally resetting the modem.

Unplug the Linksys router while pressing the reset button.

Shut down your computer for one minute.

Plug the Linksys router back into the wall outlet.

Reboot your computer.

Open your web browser to access a website.

Type the below in the address bar if you want to reset your password:

http://192.168.1.1

A prompt from the site will request a user name and password.

The user name stays blank, or, in some models, is "admin".

Navigate to the security tab. Input your new password to protect unauthorized access to your router

hope this helps

Hi jerryablake,

Welcome to Fixya. You don't need to reinstall the cd of the router, You can access the router page so that you will be able to obtain the password or Network Key.

ITo access the router page you need a working computer that is connected to the router. To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is admin and the password is admin.

Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security look for the Network Key or Passphrase. You can personalize your Network Key. The Network Key serves as a password on your network to make it secure. Then Save the settings

If this works dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

I reset the WRT400N password, then entered the default password admin and it does not work

here is the link to the user manual ...if you changed the admin password and cannot get in you will have to reset the router and put all new settings back in

the default user name is : wrt400 or wrt400n
and default password is admin
To access the web-based utility, launch the web browser on
your computer, and enter the Router’s default IP address,
192.168.1.1 or http://wrt400n.com in the Address field.
Then, press Enter.
A password request screen will appear. (Non-Windows XP
users will see a similar screen.) Leave the User name field
blank. The first time you open the web-based utility, use
the default password admin. (You can set a new password
on the Administration > Management screen.) Click OK to
continue.

How to change router default name and password

you can't change the default name...that is always left blank, but you can change the password.

Access the user interface & click on Administration.  It should automatically be in the Management section at this point.

Enter your desired password in the Router Password field.
Re-enter to confirm the password in the next field.

Click on Save Settings.

For more information on working with your router, you can access the User Guide provided by LinkSys:
