Consider NOT connecting the camera to the computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

Thanks for your comment. I know card reader thing, just want to understand the problem, don't want to give up, if XP handles it why Windows 7 shouldn't? I'm pretty sure this is the driver compatibility issue with windows 7.

It most likely is a driver compatibility issue. Nikon still has not committed to supporting Windows7. Until then, the only *sure* way to download is via a card reader.

Try rechargeables anyway just in case.Sometimes with age these cameras don't work well with alkalines. If that still doesn't work then I would suggest contacting your local Nikon authorized service center.

Have no disk to install program for camera. is there one that can be downloaded

Here is the page to download the software: http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Compact-Digital-Cameras/26198/COOLPIX-L22.html#tab-ProductDetail.ProductTabs.Software

Alternatively, you could just explore it as if it were a external drive once you've plugged it in.

Hello and welcome to FixYa

The problem is probably related to the internal driver database of windows 7. Your camera probably doesn't have a generic driver to use.

Please go to a electronics store and buy a USB card reader. I bought one last week and it cost $0.5 so its cheap as dirt. Then simply remove the card from your camera , pop it into the reader and the pictures will appear on a drive like a flashdrive in your my computer folder.

This is a much better option than using the camera's cable as it is faster , safer , saves on your camera battery and you don't need to install any software or drivers.

Kind Regards
Andrea

Try also to do windows update while the camera is turned ON and is connected to the computer. Windows update automatically searches for updated drivers on Microsoft's database.
