Question about Brother HL-4040CN Laser Printer

1 Answer

Hi I have a brother HL-4040 CDN -- I had to clean off the imaging drum by rotating the gear manually now it is telling me that all three of my new colours of toner are suddenly at their end of life covering the sensor hole is not working- so thinking the rotation of the gear manually to clean the imaging drums on each colour made these toners 'age' prematurely....? any way to reset this 'count '? Only assuming this is the problem as they all went 'out of toner' at once after I cleaned this thing thanks

SOURCE: Toner End Life

Ther is a small viewport (about 1/4" dia) on each end of the cartridge that a photo sensor apparently shines through. The port is not near the bottom, so there's room for plenty of toner below it. Put a small piece of electrical tape over one of them and it will print fine..
Just a thought it worked for soe of my frnds..its worth a try..
Good luck!

Brother HL-1250 owner's manual

Three Horizontal lines indicates a 'Light Burnt Drum'. The drum units are light sensitive. If they are left in the light too long they will be affected and it will show as black horizontal bars. The number of bars really depends on the circumference of the drum some are 2 some are 3 some can be 5 etc.

Solving this you can only replace the drum unit. Check with your local remanufacturing outlet to source a replacement drum unit at a price WAY better than buying new.

Faded left side of printed page

Hi mike,
Clean the corona wire again using a q-tip moistened lightly with water or glass cleaner. Try carefully shaking the newtoner cartridgeback and forth to evenly distribute the toner inside the cartridge.

Wipe the scanner window (inside the machine close to where the drum rotates) clean with a soft, lint-free cloth. See page 74 of the user manual.

Power down the printer and clean all silver contacts on the toner cartridge, drum cartridge, and corresponding contacts inside the printer body.

Re-seat all components ensuring the drum cartridge is fully inserted and try printing again.

The printer put extra dots that are not on my

Three or four repeating marks down the page means there will be a spot or smudge of toner on drum unit. Open the front hatch and remover the toner and drum assembly. Separate the toner and drum. Rotate the drum cylinder using the white gear at one end looking carefully at the surface of the cylinder as you turn it. Somewhere on the surface you will see one or more black specks. These need to be cleaned off using alcohol (preferably Iso-propanol but methylated spirit will do)on a cotton ball (or very soft cloth or tissue paper). Once you have found and cleaned off all specks you can re-assemble the toner and drum, put it back in the printer and run a test page. That should fix your problem.

I got a brand new Brother HL-4040 CDN and it doesn't print?

You may not have your paper holder all the way engaed like it should be. It is trying to pick up a piece of paper and can't find one.I hope you did put the paper in and some of the printers you can put the paper in more than one place it may be looking for the paper in that place. I hope this helps you.

I have a brother HL-5140 which has some nasty ink spodges on each page. Have carefully cleaned wire as recommended . Is there anything else I can do?

if they are evenly spaced, it will be 1 of 2 things, either the fuser or the drum, if you want to check the drum, take it out, take the toner out of the drum, and rotate the drum by turning the gear, be careful not to touch the drum not have it in direct sunlight or incandescent light and see if you can find the spodges on it.
you can also do a test print, print from the manual tray, and open the main cover after the paper goes in almost all the way. open the door, take the drum out and look at the paper, take it out slowly in the direction the paper was going and see if you see the splodge, if you do, again you will know its the drum.
thanks adi

Brother 4070 CDW Drum Unit Error

The green tabs that you have to slide are under the color cartridges, so remove the three color cartridges and you will see three green tabs, to slide the tab across the wire you have to first open the translucent plastic wire cover, then slide the green tab across the wires and return it to it's original position, close the wire covers, replace the color cartridges, and reassemble the printer. All the Best

How do I replace the drum on a Brother hl 2040.

I have 'reused' the same drum three times and still prints like a charm.
Open the toner door and pull out the toner/drum assembly. Take the toner off the drum tray. Use a alcohol pad or lint free cloth and wipe the mauve coloured drum to remove the excess lint and toner collected on the drum. Rotate the drum with the white gear and keep cleaning until the whole drum is done.
Put the toner back in the drum tray. Clean the corona wire by sliding the blue tab back and forth 3 or 4 times. Put the toner/drum back into the printer and close the door.
After the printer does the self test the drum light will cone on again so then you need to reset the counters.
Open the door again
Hold the GO button until all 4 lights are lit up
Release the GO button
Close the door
Printer will self test and should extinguish all the trouble lights.
