Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

During the cooking for our Christmas dinner the temperature started declining from the 350 degrees to 280 degrees. We tried the top burner to make sure the stovetop was working and the whole thing shut down. We have put the plug back into the socket twice and tried to get the clock started to hopefully "kickstart" it again. It let us put the time in, but would not go any further. Please help with a suggestion to fix this. It will cost us $79 just for a repair man to come here; then everything else will be extra, of course. This is our second Maytag in 9 years! Not a good average, is it? Jane Ackerman

Hi Jane,
Ouch! Sorry about the Christmas dinner. I sounds as though the circuit breaker tripped.
First, find the circuit breaker panel.

1 Check to see if a breaker has tripped. These breakers are double sided because stoves are
240 volt appliances, like the water heater or the house heater. There is a bar that connects
two single breakers together. The breaker will be slightly off center to the other breakers if it is tripped.
2 If it HAS tripped DON'T TURN IT ON YET
3 Go back to the stove and plug it in.
4 Turn on a top burner(not the one that may have tripped the breaker) preferably one that you know works that you don't use very much.
5 Go back into the garage and turn on the breaker.
6 If it goes on OK go back to the kitchen. You have done the first diagnostic test.
7 Check the burner to see if it is getting hot. If it is, turn it to high and then turn on the burner that blew the breaker in the first place. See if it blows the breaker again. If it does not. Turn on all of the burners that you know work. You have now done several Diagnostic Steps that are important.
8 If one of the burners trips the breaker, you have one of the culprets. If not, GREAT.
9 Shut off all of the burners
10 DO NOT TURN ON THE OVEN
11 Open the oven door and look very carefully with a flashlight at the bottom bake heating element. Look at the the entire element. If it blew (similar to when a light bulb blows) you will
find white powder around the hole in it or it will be completely broken, or have bubbles in it. Some indication like that. If so it has failed and must be replaced.
12 There is one other rare possibility, but it would not have blown the breaker. Many ovens have clock baking timers. These timers will, shut down the oven. If someone adjusted the timer and didn't turn the knobs in the exact right position. It will ruin the party shutting down the oven at the worst time. But it won't shut the stove top burners down.
IF YOU HAVE FUSES INSTEAD OF BREAKERS
If you have fuses instead of circuit breakers, Find several of the large cylinder shaped fuses to conduct the diagnostic tests I suggest. They are usually available at home depot.
RARE PROBLEM
One last but very rare occurence with breakers is their specifications sometimes change over a long period of time. If that is the case, they will trip and lower and lower overload levels. Simply Replace.

I hope this helps,
Good Luck
Best Regards,
Mark

I am cooking a roast beef dinner for Christmas I bought a 13lb chuck boneless and I need to know how long to cook in in a traditional oven.

5 After browning the roast at a 500°F temperature in the oven for 15 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 325°F. To figure out the total cooking time, allow about 11-12 minutes per pound for rare and 13-15 minutes per pound for medium rare.

Really, you need a probe thermometer. Leave it to rest for 15 minutes after you take it out of the oven, loosely tented with foil. I am a chef!

Is the sharp above range microwave model r-1871t recirculating?

According to the Sharp product site, http://www.sharpusa.com/ForHome/HomeAppliances/Microwaves/Models/R1871.aspx , the R-1871 is a convection and microwave oven. The manual describes using the convection oven feature on page 18 (page 20 of the PDF). The direct link to the manual is: http://files.sharpusa.com/Downloads/ForHome/HomeAppliances/MicrowaveOvens/Manuals/mic_man_R1872.pdf . The convection button is on the top left in the middle group of buttons. You use the numeric power level buttons to set the oven temperature. When you program convection cooking, the 1 button will bring the oven to 100 degrees F. The 6 button gets the oven to 350 degrees F.

I hope this helps.

Have a Proctor Silex small crock pot, no manual. Setting are Off, 1, 2 and "AutoShift". There is no timer. How can it be set to (1) be sure to cook the food long enough and (2) stay on / keep...

You can find a Use and Care Guide for your product at the following website. You will need to locate the model number of your crock point. Select Slow_Cookers in the product field; Select your model number and click on Submit.

A pdf file of your Use and care Guide will be provided; note they are scanned files and some are of poor quality.

Model 36400 has a similar control to your model. The Guide provides a table of the time to cook at settings 1 (low), 2 (high) and Auto Shift. Auto Shift starts at the high setting and then decreases to the low setting. The time to cook at Auto shift is in between the time taken at the low and high settings. The low and Auto Shift settings are designed for long cook times at a simmer. On the high setting some foods like soups will come to a boil and may need stirring during cooking.

The crock point has no auto turn off and will keep foods at a simmer when on the low or Auto Shift settings. With some practice you will learn how much time this will take for various foods.

The sure way is to use a tip sensitive digital instant-read thermometer to check the final temperature of the food. Check according the guidance provided by the Partnerships Food Safety Education:

HOW DO I ROAST A CHICKEN IN A AC925CHS

Search the internet for “roast chicken recipe for microwave”
Here is one just in case you don’t find one:
Microwave Roast Chicken
3 lbs. chicken
1 tsp. salt
4 tbsp. butter or margarine
1 tsp. paprika

Instructions
Melt butter in a custard cup in microwave. Mix paprika into melted butter. Wash chicken (reserve giblets, these are best cooked conventionally). Sprinkle inside of chicken with salt. Cover ends of legs, tail, and wings with small pieces of saran wrap or wax paper. Place trivet on inverted saucer or small casserole lid in 12 x 7 inch baking dish. Place chicken breast side down on saucers. Brush with butter. Cover with waxed paper. Cook 12 minutes. Remove wax paper or saran warp from legs, tail, and wings. Turn chicken breast side up and brush with butter. Cover with wax paper and cook 12 minutes more or until meat thermometer registers 180 degrees (temperature will increase to 195 degrees during standing).

DO NOT USE MEAT THERMOMETER IN OVEN WHEN COOKING!! Remove chicken from oven; cover with aluminum foil and let stand 15 to 20 minutes before carving. Note: For other weights of chicken, allow 8 minutes cooking time per pound.

Kenmore Microwave Hood Combination: over the stove Model #721.80602500

Disclaimer: I'm a DIYer, not a technician.

Our GE over-the-range microwave stopped producing heat yesterday while warming part of the T-giving feast. Everything else (fan, control panel, light) works fine.

After disassembly and testing last night, I discovered a defective "secondary door switch." Your Kenmore uses a similar switch (~$19 on-line), and that might be the problem. But it also could be other things, such as a bad thermal cut-out.

If you know anyone who's handy with a multimeter, most of the basic diagnostics seem to be pretty straightforward.
