SOURCE: How do I Recover data from an old hard drive

This may sound silly, but does the external enclosure have power? You may have neglected to connect the required power adapter, or it may not be working properly. You might also have a problem with the enclosure's internal power or data cables. They are sometimes pretty flimsy, and sometimes they can go bad.

There's also the chance the drive itself is bad and isn't being detected as a result. Or the interface board in the external enclosure may have failed, and the drive is OK but the computer doesn't see it. If you are connecting to a desktop PC, you can try connecting the drive directly to the main board using an IDE cable and try accessing it that way. Just be sure to set the master/slave jumper accordingly if you do that.

Ac adaptor will not work

Go to any computer-store, and buy a new "empty" external drive enclosure.
Then, "transplant" the disk-drive from your W.D. enclosure into the new enclosure.
All your files will remain accessible, and the new power-supply will power your disk-drive.

My WD 250 GB hard drive no longer reads on my laptop....what has happened to it?

There are 4 major components:

* the USB cable -- try a different one

* the power-supply -- try to find a different one, or use a multi-meter to check the output (voltage and amperage) levels, to confirm that the actual values match the specifications

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter

Try connecting it to a different computer, to see if it works at all.

Disassemble the enclosure, remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the drive itself is OK or not OK.

If it is OK, then buy a new "empty" external storage enclosure, and "transplant" your disk-drive into the new enclosure.

Is the warranty still valid? If so, exercise the warranty.
If not, then W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program, allowing you to buy a new W.D. device from the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

Why wont my Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive work?

Several possibilities:

* bad USB port in your computer (try another USB port)
* messed-up copy of Windows (try connecting to a different computer)
* damaged USB cable between computer and the Passport (replace it)
* bad disk-drive inside the enclosure (replace it)
* bad USB-to-disk-drive adapter (buy a new "empty" enclosure)

Check the warranty on it, to see if W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you. If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new Passport through their web-site, and you qualify for a discount on your purchase.

Western digital passport se won't open on my computer, has windows xp

You need to try it on a differant computer. That will let you know if the problem is the external drive or the usb ports on your computer.

Usually it is the usb interface on the external drive. You can buy a new usb enclosure and take the hard drive out of your passport drive and put it in the new enclosure. That will get you acess to your data again. You can find enclosures for as cheap as $14 so this is worth doing.

Yep - Me too

Hi,

Replacement power supplies are expensive and like hens teeth to find. You can however buy a complete enclosure at pretty much any PC store and transfer the drive from your existing WD enclosure to a new one of your choosing that will come with it's own power supply cord.

If the drive fails to work in the new enclosure you may have more troubles than just power, if this is the case reply back with your Country, State and City and I will direct yuo to a nearby Data Recovery Facility.

My Western Digital hardrive doesn't turn on..?

It seems like the mother board for the enclosure has failed.
Normally for external hard drives, you could just remove the drive from its enclosure, and place inside another enclosure, but for this type of drive, that's not possible due to the linux os partitioning of the drive, and the mionet requirement for the data.
As these drives come with a 3 year warranty, your best optin is to create an RMA on the Western Digital website http://support.wdc.com/warranty/index_end.asp?lang=en and choose the option to have a new drive sent out prior to sending the old one back.
When the new one arrives, open both enclosures, and swap the hard drives. This should enable you to recover the data.
Do ensure you send the old enclosure back wiyhin the 30-day limit, or you will be charged for the drive.

WD 500gb external HD shuts down when plugged into USB port

Try a replacement USB cable first. If that does not fix the problem, then the USB to SATA adapter board is faulty, in that case you will need to take out the internal disk to replace the external enclosure.

see
YouTube - How To: Take Apart A Western Digital My Book Enclosure

If unit is under warranty see : WD Support > Warranty Services > End User > Warranty Policy.

Note any SATA external enclosure willl work wthe same with the internal WD HD.
