My camera is also taking very blurry pix. I too have tried to adjust settings. Also, it only gives me flash choices of AUTO or OFF, no ON.

Same problem however I noticed that when I zoom in a tiny bit, the auto focus seems to work. I'm going to pop open the case to see if I can figure it out

After 51 weeks of use, my SD1000 stopped focusing. Well, it would focus if at one end or the other (I forget which) of the zoom range, but nowhere else. Luckily, it was still under warranty! I got authorization from Canon to send it in for repair. Got an email from them a few days later, saying they'd received my camera, and wanted me to authorizing them charging $100 to do the service. Their "standard charge." In other words, their warranty is a fiction. Too bad, because I liked the pictures the camera took. But I've had it with Canon.

I have had this camera for about a year. One second it was focusing, the next day it wasn't. I've tried playing with the settings and I cant find any solution. Sigh.

The best chance to use your SD1000 is to set to picture, push ISO (on top of the func. set ring) and set to hi. This works pretty well. Do not bother sending any camera to Canon, they charge the "standard charge" plus for all their manufacturing problems on all Canon cameras. Definately the worst customer service on the market.

It is almost impossible to not use the AF mode from the camera. Perhaps you managed to put the camera in Accessery lens AF, without any extra lens on the camera. Or perhaps only the pictures are blurred, because you zoomed in to far, without a tripod.
As long as I can't see a picture it is difficult to decide where the problem comes from.
While shooting a picture, just press the shutter release button half, till the green light goes on. Then press the button fully.

It sounds like the focus element in your lens is not functioning properly. Does the lens retract completely when you turn off the camera? When you push the button does the camera attempt to focus the image? If you do not see any change in the image when you push the button, and do not hear any sound - then your focus motor is either jammed or malfunctioning. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

Problem with image

What mode is the camera in? is it in "Auto" at the top there is a dial switch it to auto and press button halfway (shutter button) when you press the button halfway the camera will beep and display a square box on the LCD. If the camera beeps once and the box is orange it could not focus and you need to retry pressing halfway again. When it is in focus it will beep 2 times and it will show a GREEN box. This is the indication it could focus on the subject correctly. Its a machine and sometimes it takes it a bit for it to figure out what your wanting it to do. Its the nature of the unit

The doe problem go away if you bang on the side of the camera? there is a known issue with the CCD sensor on certin model cameras that after a few years the glue or somthing dries up inside the sensor and it developes a bad connection. Canon has admit they know about this problem and they will fix them free of charge and pay shipping both ways. Sometimes users can bang on the side of the camera and the camera will work properly again but not for very long. I cant see your display so im not sure if thats it or not but the problem has this purple blackish symptom. Go to the canon usa webpage and then search around for your camera model and if there is a known issue it will say on their site. Then there are ways to contact them on their site.
