This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Look in the section for the motor, pump gearcase and you'll see the Motor Coupler.

Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washers use a "Motor Coupler" between the motor and transmission.

It's used as a fail safe device and consists of three parts.

Two of the parts are the same, plastic units with three prongs that fit on one of the motor output shafts and the other on the transmission input shaft. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes.

The power from the motor is transmitted through the rubber piece to the transmission.

The other shaft on the motor directly drives the pump. This is likely why the machine drains.

If the motor coupler is broken, or worn, the motor may not be able to send full power to the transmission for agitating or spinning.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor and motor mounting plate to inspect and replace the motor coupler.

If the coupler looks damaged, it's a relatively easy fix.

Pry the plastic pieces from the motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I've found that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefully fit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and press them in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equally around the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to the three un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

Kenmore Series 80 Washer Drips and Spin Cycle Sometimes Has Low Torque

Does it leak every time it's run, or only occasionally? It could be that the belt on the drain pump is going bad or is loose, so it works some times but not always. Could be that the belt broke or the drain failed, so it will always leak from now on. It's hard to say without actually taking it apart and having a look

Foodsaver pro locked up. 3 green lites blink off and on. is the problem fixable?

The reset button is the small black rubber covered hole on the left side of the vacuum channel. If you press down on that with something like a knitting needle with the unit on, it should reset

Washer fails to spin out all the water in the Permanent Press Cycle. Spins OK in all other cycles.

I had exactly the same problem and it turned out to be a slipping clutch. The clutch is just above the gear box and there was some foreign material on the surface of the white plastic so I cleaned it with fine sandpaper and also cleaned the stainless steel "cup" that the clutch bears on and then added four washers to increase the push from the spring and the washer spins as well as it did when new. It is also possible that your brake is dragging but I would check the clutch first. If the clutch is in very bad shape you can buy a new one for about $40

Washing machine not spinning

The pin is a shipping pin and serves no purpose after the machine is set up. These machines comes with a plastic strap through the back panel to hold components in place for shipping. There are plastic cups that the pins fall into after the strap is pulled.
Ignore the pin.
Your no spin problem is a stripped out direct drive coupling between the motor and transmission.
It is a easy fix.
Use the attached video as reference to change out the part.

Washer does spin but barely agitates

It sounds like the agitator dogs are worn.
To remove the agitator, pry off the agitator cap and remove the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out pull up on the top section of the agitator (auger) to remove it. Underneath the auger you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). . Replace those and it should be ok.

I have a Kenmore washer about 12 years old. The agitator seems to be slipping...doesn't move very much and stir up the clothes. What could be the problem?

You need to purchase agitator dogs and install them in between the two parts of the agitator. They just pull apart. Turn the top part upside down and look down in there. You will see some small, fish shaped plastic things, remove them. & replace with new.

Replacement parts

I think you may have the skills to make it
get some plastic epoxy or , i get them from a auto parts store but you can also find them in home improvement stores, etc

make a small paper cylindrical mold that would engulf the old plastic piece, fill it with epoxy to the top, turn it upside down and place it on the plastic part where the old hook was. once solid you can cut this to size so it will hold the spring.
