We had new cable company installed and we had to use a router. We cannot get on xbox live

You will need an active internet provider and depending on what Xbox you have, either an ethernet cable or an adapter.
the new Xbox has WiFi built in and the old one will need an adapter for WiFi.
If you do not have wireless or the new xbox, both models just require an ethernet cable going to the router.

Recheck your settings on the xbox.

If using wifi on the xbox, you'll have to setup a new connection to the new router.

If the xbox is wired via cable to the router, you may need to add a router password or other settings .

you need to register the router to your internet provider so that the modem will always give an internet connection to the router even if the router will be reset.

from that the xbox should follow through and connect to xbox live if you have an open NAT type.

1. check the router to see if you have a firmware update
2. check cables ( make sure you don't have a crossover cable.
3. check firewall in router and the PC OS ( operating system)environment.
4. check the setup for the XBOX

if you are using a router then you will have to set the connection up your main line to allow the connection to be made. if you are direct connecting with the modem to the xbox and its still not connecting then the xbox live server is down. I used to run into not connecting to xbox live alot more through using my router because my router was old and good gaming on live requires a good gaming router. check to see if your computer is acknowlledging your router, And if it is then, Make sure your router is up to date. sounds like a router issue. post back with any more help if its needed :-)

If you cannot connect using the wireless because the signal strength is too low, you can connect the Xbox using a LAN cable to the router. You might need someone to install the LAN cable for you depending upon how you can locate neatly.

You need to reconfigure the wireless settings of your xbox. First, verify if you xbox can connect online by using ethernet cable. If it works that way, the only thing that you need to reconfigure is the wireless settings of the xbox. Make sure you have the same SSID and encryption key with the new router.

If you are using the cd that comes with the router, that is the problem. You do not have to use the cd. Go to the control panel and un-install the program that the cd installed. then:

Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider. If you have DSL, the router needs to be configured with PPOe.

To make a router connection to Xbox Live:

1. Before you connect any cables, turn off your router, modem, PC, and Xbox 360 console. (Unplug your modem from its power source to turn it off.)
2. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your modem and the other end to the Ethernet input port on the back of your router.
3. With another Ethernet cable, connect one end to one of the router's Ethernet output ports. Connect the other end to your PC's Ethernet port.
4. With the third Ethernet cable, connect one end to another of the router's Ethernet output ports. Connect the other end to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox 360 console.
5. Turn on your modem, then your router, then your PC.
6. Make sure your PC can access the Internet. If not, you may need to configure the router for Internet access. For help configuring the router using your PC, check the instructions that came with the router.
7. Turn on your Xbox 360 console with no disc in the disc tray.
8. If you've already used your Xbox 360 system for offline play, the Xbox Dashboard will open to the Xbox Live area. Select the Xbox Live banner. When you see the Xbox Live Marketplace you'll know you're connected to Xbox Live.
   

Path #1:

if you want to play online, with other people i am assuming? then what you would want is xbox live. you do have to setup a stable internet connection in order to connect to the internet*. and also you do have to pay a membership fee in order to stay in xbox live.

* and if you want to connect xbox live, you need a cable or dsl connection, either you need an ethernet cable or a pre-tuned wireless usb that is made only for the xbox 360. and also, you would need a cable/dsl company that is accepted by xbox live. and then go to the xbox 360 dashboard, then, click "join membership",

Path #2:

setup an ethernet connection either directly, or with a router/hub, then go the system settings, and click, "computers" and then click connect. but this path way is only to create a connection to the computer.
