Question about Maytag MDG9606 Dryer

1 Answer

The dryer squeals on start up and quiets after 40 seconds or so. I took it apart and the belt and pulley seem ok. How do I know if they are worn? I thought it was a problem with the felt liner at either end of the barrel. Is the belt relatively easy to replace? Thanks for your help.

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.

you have a drum bearing, going bad, or your belt tension pully. it stops squealing because the unit heats up and the metal expands. you can also try spraying (WD40) the belt tension pulley..

Why does my Estate dryer sqeek or squeal so loud

I just had a similar problem with my Whirlpool dryer. It would squeek very loudly and then chirp a bit and then go quiet.
Took the back off and found that the belt tensioner arm pulley that drives the drum turning had stopped spinning. Sprayed some silicone on the hub a couple of times and it freed up and is working again. Everything is fine for now. I'm going to order a new part 'cause I know it will just happen again when the silicone wears out.

My car makes a loud squealing sound when i start it

Mary,

This type of problem is best checked by a trusted mechanic. I doubt you'd hear squealing noises from the crankshaft or harmonic balancer; but it is likely to be heard from a belt tensioner pulley, water pump (or other belt-driven devices under the hood - such as the alternator, power steering pump, etc.). A loose or slipping belt can also cause this noise.

Spraying WD-40 on the source of the squeal may quiet the sound - but not solve the problem that is causing it. By simply masking the problem with WD-40 instead of fixing it - you run the risk of the squealing part failing catastrophically - probably at the least desirable place and time.

For your own safety and convenience, have this problem checked and repaired properly.

Good luck!

Dryer has very load high squeal at start, lasting few minutes, then high quieter sqeak rest of load. Spins and heats ok

Belt is stretched out and slipping on drum, pulley or both. Time to replace it.

How do I fix a squeaky belt on a minivan?

Post question is automotive section?

Is belt squealing? or is there a squeaky noise?

Squealing would denote belt slippage... belt might be loose, apply more belt tension at idler pulley (if possible). Consider trying a spray-on 'anti-slip" compound.

Squeaky noise could mean a bad pulley bearing.

Squealing noise on start up drying still works

This dryer needs to be taken apart to lubricate any and all moving parts. Idler pulley and rollers, if they are worn out in any way, replace them.
Also, consider a new belt.

Hi! The pulley could be worn or the belt is not properly adjusted.Causing the belt not to grip the pulley but slide on it,creating a friction.
