Question about Metra Antennaworks 44-PW64

Open Question

I have a 1999 Nissan Maxima. I went to replace the antenna and motor. The after market replacement does not have the same connections. I was advised to trim the wires coming from the vehicle and make a connector that would fit into the new antenna and motor. There is a Black, Black with red stripe, and Red wire coming from the vehicle. I spliced the connector and left the Black wire off, put Black with Red Stripe to Blue Antenna wire, and Red to Red. I am assuming that the black wire is the ground wire? There is no power. The fuse is not blown. What am I doing wrong???

kevinrose: are you installing a factory antenna or an aftermarket?
The factory antenna will get a constant power supply which is a pink or purple wire. This wire is hot whether the key is on or off.
The way the antenna is made to go up, is through a second power source which is black/red wire. When you turn the radio on, this wire goes hot when the ignition is switched in the accessory or on positions. When you turn the radio off or turn the ignition switch completely off, the antenna will completely retract. The circuit for the antenna is served with a 10 amp fuse which is located on the driver's side to the left of the steering column, The fuses should be labeled on the door you remove to access the panel.
CAUTION!!!! most aftermarket antennas DO NOT have the kind of connector that will all you to plug or easily connect the factory antenna cable to it. You wil have to make an adaptor.
So before taking things out of the packaging check this out or you will find your self with an antenna to sell.

sandman: Depending on the situation you are describing is the solution This is contingent on your having removed the old antenna and it's remains. Ideally you and one other person to assist would be best for this job. Have the radio turned on and feed the antenna mast cable in with the teeth facing the rear of the car. Push the cable down until it stops. At that point be prepared to feed the cable in as the motor draws it downward and be prepared to feed the mast it self into the antenna housing where it will continue to rectract until it stops nearly flush with the fender . At the time it stops, you will hear it going bump, bump, bump a number of times. This is normal. Once retracted, you can reinstall the retaining nut or collar which prevents the antenna from being pushed out of the housing. The collar has two small holes in the top which are for a special tool. A pair of snap ring pliers will work in their place.
If you have the remains of the antenna cable inside of the antenna assembly, unless you are somewhat skilled, it may be better to remove the antenna assembly and bring it to a shop for the to replace the mast.

I have a 1999 nissan maxima se the a/c clutch went out. Can I repalce just the clutch or do I have to replace the whole unit. I have been told both.

You can just replace the clutch, but if you dont fix the reason WHY it went out, your going to have to replace the compressor, anyhow. Its 11 years old, find out if the condenser fans are working ok. replace th ecompressor, and drier, and flush out the condensor. Have a a/c shop do it, you dont want to try it yourself, it will just cost even more.

I have had 3 maxima's and found the best website.

I had a blower problems on the 94 maxima, but it was the relay (did you connect your old blower directly to a battery?

How many wires are there? Can you check them with a voltmeter.

Sounds like your solinoid is bad on your startermotor. Replace with known good starter. If you want to check it out then pull the startermotor take it to your local auto parts store and they can verify it.

Rusted external mounted antenna

If its a "fixed" non adjustable antenna, just sand it down with steel wool and wipe it with silicone once in a while to keep rust off. If there are two "flats" on a conical base, most times it can be unscrewed and replaced. Antennas that slide in and out or electric antennas cannot be removed this way.

The brake lights on my 1986 Nissan Maxima don't work. I've traced the problem to a blue box in the trunk next to the antenna. There is power for the brake lights going in but not out. What is that box...

its called a brake switch relay. It's there to compensate the load of multiple globes and if you use a trailer. you can replace that with an after market one like bosch or narva.

My power antenna does not go up. the mast may be missing. i can hear the motor running like it is raising the antenna then stops. do i have to buy a new assembly or can i just buy a mast?

more likely the mast drive cable is broken and needs to be replaced, very common. You will need to contact the dealer to see if they sell a mast repair kit for your car, many Japanese cars make you replace the whole antenna to fix this problem.
