You need to obtain the SATA drivers for the Hard drive for your motherboard and save them to a bootable media such as a floppy drive or a USB stick if the mobo supports this.
When you install windows (must be XP you are using as Vista and 7 normally have the sata drivers installed), at the prompt press F6 to install 3rd part drivers and it will look for the drivers, after that you should have no problems.

If this does not work, you may have issues with the hard drive, I would check to see if it is shown in the Bios, if not, check it is properly connected, if that does not wrok, the drive could be faulty

Will not boot. Keeps looking for a bootable drive.

It appears to be a Sata drive.
See if you can see it in the Bios setup screen.

The most common way to enter setup is to press DEL after turning the power on.
Watch the screen, other instructions may be given.

If it is found in Bios
It has no partition created on it.
It does not have a bootable partition.
In this case windows setup should identify it and start installatio.

If it is not found in bios
It has no data connection, make sure it is properly connected.
It has no power. Again, check the connection, Check that both 5V and 12v are presemt
It is faulty.

Go to the bios setup menu to the boot option. When there, scroll down to the Hard Drive2.gif Priority area and make sure you have the boot disk listed FIRST.

At start no operating system found

By your description either the drive has died or somehow the BIOS has been changed to not be able to see the drive. Can you run setup on startup to get into the BIOS? From there you should be able to see if the BIOS is detecting the drive. Mose BIOS setups have a selection to automatically detect the drive. I would try that.

Hi,

there are many reasons why, the computer would,nt find or see the Drive.
1:) the laptop drive, may need formatting.
2:) the drive, is not cabled correctly.
3:) the drive is faulty.

go into the bios setup, usually F2 Or esc Or Delete at setup. options sometimes appear briefly on screen. ** to enter setup press F2 Or similar**
find boot sequence or bootup order. and set the CD/DVD to become the first boot device.

Put your setup-install disk, in the dvd drive.
When rebooting the system, the computer will start a setup from CD/DVD. this will tell you that the drive is not found, or needs to be formatted. follow the on-screen options.

Finally, certain laptops only recognise, a drive of a certain size. install the original to see if this still works. Also check there are no limitation jumpers on the old-drive. ( small plastic bridging pins )

Computer problem, help.

This generally indicates a hard drive crash/failure, in which the hard drive will need to be replaced. Rare, but occasionally you will get this error from an operating system glitch. Before you run out and buy a new hard drive, try reloading the operating system. If you have any problems during or after the install, then the hard drive is shot.

Dimension 3100 Won't Boot

Make sure your HD Cables are all firmly plugged in, and that all drives are starting when you turn on the computer. You can tell with harddrives as they will slightly whine, and have a small, steady vibration to them. If they are all starting, and all cables are fully seated, check in your Setup utility that the drives themselves are Auto-Detect. If none of this fixes your issue, you may have to refer your computer to a computer repair shop.

Hope this helps!
