Question about Aprilaire Humidifiers

1 Answer

I have just had an Aprilaire 700 humidifier installed on my gas forced air furnace. The technician attached the supply line to the hot water line leading from the electric water heater. The humidifier's digital controls are set on the #5 setting. The unit seems to run constantly - even when the furnace is not operating and cold air seems to be coming from the air vents. I am concerned about the amount of hot water being directed to the drain and the electric energy useage -and obvious costs for both. Are these typical of normal operations or is this something the installer should return to check and possibly adjust? Thank you.

Yes - this was good advice. Setting adjustments confirmed by the HVAC folks who installed the unit. However, the manufacturer advises to have the supply come off the hot water leg of my water heater to perform properly. Thanks!

Is he taking it off the hot water supply out of the water heater or the incoming cold water supply on the heater? it only needs cold water supply to operate, but it does need to be softened water to keep the water filter pads from liming up,as for it running constantly lower the humidity number and it should cycle normally if set too high all your doing is wasting water down the drain as the furnace cant use all the water supplied to the humidity level in the house, the colder it is outside the higher you need to set the number on the aprilaire unit

Water does not deliver to the evaporator panel

3 things it can be, If the humidistat on the wall or installed in your return air ductwork by your furnace is not set high enough it may not be calling it on. set it higher until you here it click. If it is set high enough it should power a solenoid valve to send water to the panel. Solenoid may be bad. Make sure the water line feeding the humidifier is opened. Should be a small copper line from the 700 to a cold water pipe.

Water and motor always run on Aprilaire 760, even when furnace is off.

Hope this solves your problem, look for the humidistat, it should be located on cold air return duct near furnace, make sure it is not set in the on position, if it is, then this is why it is staying on, please set humidistat any where from 20 to 35%, never over 40%. If the humidistat is set properly and is still running, you may have a electrical problem, humidifier circuit should only receive power(24 volts) when the indoor blower motor of furnace receives power, also if you have galvanized plumbing in your home, you may have a piece of rust or lime deposit in the humidifier solenoid valve preventing it from closing, turn water off to humidifier and disconnect water supply line entering solenoid valve inspect & clean protector screen. Good luck.

We had our furnace repair turn on our Aprilaire 760 last summer. It gives off a very strong smell similar to an air freshener. We'd like that to be less in intensity. Furnance company says it's just fine....

I hope this helps you, have the repair person check to see if a furnace filter air freshener was installed at your last furnace check up without your knowledge. Also checked all wall and or floor registers to make sure the source of smell is not coming from them, it may be circulating though the duct system.last thing is to replace media pad in humidifier along with furnace filters, if you have air cleaner wash filters with hot water and baking soda, wipe & let dry before re- installing them. Your repair person may have use a strong smelling cleaning solution in humidifier that is now circulating though out your home, good luck.

Aprilaire 700 never shuts off

Thanks for your question,
Sounds to me like you have a bad solenoid valve in your Humidifier, this will need replaced, the solenoid is supposed to open and close when there is a call for humidity only when the furnace is running, then when the proper amount of humidity is sensed by the humidistat, then will it shut off, with the solenoid not working it will let water flow through like an open faucet, the solenoid is the componet that the 1/4in copper tubing connects to at the humidifier, has two wires running from it, you will need to shut the power off before changing this out, also shut the water off at the valve at the other end of the 1/4in copper line, or you might get soaked, please be careful when installing the new solenoid, making sure the water line connection is secure, or you will have leaks, hope this was helpful, please leave a rating, thanks again for your question,
