All TVs and other receiving equipment (e.g. VCR, DVD) needs to be retuned after the digital switchover, particularly if you were only watching analogue transmissions prior to the switch. However, not all receiving equipment has a built-in digital tuner. Some TVs and DVD recorders need a separate Freeview/digital tuner if you want to use them for recording. Devices which have a built-in digital tuner will usually have the DVB icon (looks more like DV3) somewhere on the front of the unit.

It's likely that your DVD recorder simply needs retuning - assuming it has a built-in DVB tuner or is connected to a Freeview Box. This can be done from within the on-screen menus of the DVD player. These can be accessed by pressing the "MENU" button on the DVD player remote and then running the CHANNEL SCAN for digital channels from the SETUP/OPTIONS menu.

I can let you know the exact steps for retuning your DVD recorder, but I will need to know the model number of the DVD recorder in order to do so. It would also help me if you could provide the following details, so that I can verify whether it needs an additional digital tuner and the correct setup.

1. Model number of DVD recorder.
2. Does it have the DVB (DV3) icon?
3. Is there a Freeview box connected to the DVD recorder?
4. Can you playback from DVD and/or hard-disk?

My Sony RDR-GX7 dvd recorder keeps giving me a "disc error" message every time I try to play a disc. How can I fix this?

Hard to say because this could be caused by any number of things. You could try cleaning the optical read head but this could get very involved unless you use a cleaning disc which may not work. You could try different discs such as a CD to see if that still fails. It could be the disc format. If everything fails then most likely a repair is required. Go to and locate a SONY repair location.

I get an error message that says

It means that the DVD Recorder thinks that the DV or Digital 8 camcorder is not connected to the iLink / Firewire connector. Check you have everything connected properly or if you want to record a different way there may be a memory option that allows you to change the way the unit is expecting to receive a signal. The DV/D8 just means DV or Digital8 which are 2 standards in video recording with different types of tape. The specific interface here is an iLink interface specific to Sony to allow control of the recording interface remotely. It is also possible that your iLink or firewire connected device is not compatible with this Sony model....

Installing Vista on new hard drive- CD/DVD Driver not found

Are you installing from the SONY-supplied "System Restore" CD/DVD disks, or from a "generic" Vista DVD-ROM?

The SONY disks _should_ have the correct drivers for your notebook computer.

Can't Record, wont read blank DVD

Have the same problem with this piece of junk.
Tried all the solutions. Clean lens etc. Nothing helped.
Tried replacing the drive with another that I had. No go, apparently has some proprietary firmware.
I was about to throw it in the trash when I suddenly realized that it had a TV tuner. Hooked it up to my computer through a Pinnacle Dazzle interface and VOILA I had a hard drive recorder. I either just watch it on my monitor or burn a DVD if it is something I want to keep. Hey that is better than pitching something you paid $300 bucks for in the trash. You can pick up a dazzle or similar on EBAY for a lot less than a new Hard disc recorder will cost you.

DMR E80H hard drive

DMR-E80H Hard drive problem seems to pretty common. My drive started making the famaous kerchunk noise tonight. After disassembly I see the drive is a ATA133 Maxtor drive....are you sure that you replaced it with the correct drive? I may contact Maxtor and try to get an RMA since the drive is only 3yrs old. Good Luck
