This website sells a replacement battery and I am going to do it myself. I openned up the unit and it looks pretty easy as long as you are somewhat mechanically inclined and have a sodering tool. i'll let you know if it works out when I do it.

I have a Magellan 315 gps that is appoximately 10 yrs. old. Does it have an internal battery that needs to be replaced?

Not a fix, shared information.

Yes these units have an internal ten year lithium battery. I am currently researching this issue, as I have two dead and one working 300series GPSs. When the internal battery dies and the regular batteries are removed or die the unit will loose all user data (way points and routes), as well as the satellite map and initialization. After dieing the unit will appear to function normally but fail to lock on, track or get a fix. Only showing the coordinates from the initialization. These units also have an internal capacitor that provides sufficient power to hold the memory during quick battery changes, but not over night. I have as yet found a working solution, but only researching this for a few days.

My Nuvi350 goes dead and has no battery power when I remove it from the cradle/bracket. I've had it for a few years. Is there an internal battery that should be changed?

yes there is an internal battery and it is the problem, the battery is "hardwired" into the GPS and it must go back to Garmin or an approved GPS repair station, to replace the battery takes special tools and the battery must be soldered back into the unit, any attempt to remove the batt without the spec tools results in a damaged and unusable GPS

GPS does not come on when I plus it into lighter in car.

This behavious is typical of a bad battery or charger and it can also be a internal hardware error. Usually it just means it is time to replace the battery. The age and the symptoms are typical of a dead battery. They are actually pretty resonable for cost $15-$25. You can replace it yourself if you take care to replace any seals properlly. The battery itself just plugs in like a phone battery. Charge it up overnight and you should be up and running.

If the problem is internal you can send it in to Magellan support and they should be able to fix or refurbish it.

Don't have your model etc but from your description I would say your internal battery is dead. Most gps need a working battery to run even when hooked onto the charger.

If you are careful (mainly because of seals) you can replace the battery in a few minutes with just a small screw driver. Cost can be $20 and up from a 3rd party supplier.

It is also possible that you have a fuse or other internal hardware problem which is not a diy fix. If that is the case you should see if your gps manufacturer has a refurishment program. Usually a moderate fee and you get a new or refurbished unit back. If not then best advice is to replace with a new unit.

My bet is on the battery.

Internal battery dead,how to replace

The GPS 12 has an internal battery soldered to the board inside the unit.
I have replaced about a dozen of these over the years,
The problem is caused when the unit is stored for a long time without batteries.
The internal battery is not a rechargable.
You have to use a screwdriver in the crack that joins the 2 parts of the case and break the seal to split the case open.
This will of corse render the waterproofness of the unit void.
You then have to unsolder the internal battery from the board and find a replacement.
It is a tagged lithum battery, I can't remember the model at the moment.
Inside you will also notice the surface mount Intel 386 Chip. which is the main processer.
This has nothing to do with the battery but I found it interesting that a chip in a computer from the mid 80s worth over $3000 then, still has a use.

When you have soldered the new battery into place you need to either glue or tape the unit back together. Be careful not to damage the other parts around the battery.

Always keep charged batteries in the unit when not in use.

Hope this helps.

Powers up but no display

The internal battery needs to be replaced. It is not under warranty so any marine electronics shop can do it. The battery is for internal memory and are a common type.
