make sure that the cd rom is getting enough consistent power test all leads that are attached to the cd rom including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd rom then plug them back in this will activate found new hardware wizard
hope this helps or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your cd rom or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
if this does not fix the problem might be a registry problem
control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

Need install cd burner in windows xp

IDE or SATA connections ??????
To enable CD burning for your computer is a relatively simple process in Windows XP.
All you need is a CD burner drive installed in your computer, the disk with the drivers and software that goes with it and an XP-loaded personal computer.
Once your driver is installed, the process is almost automatic.
Here are the steps you should follow to begin creating your own CDs.

Check your system requirements before installing the CD burner and make sure that your system can handle the speed and memory requirements of the drive.
WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL.
http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules
Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source.
Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer.
While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards
Turn off the computer, disconnect the power cord and remove the cover from the case.
Check the IDE cables inside your computer.
You may be able to connect the optical CD drive to the same ribbon cable as the hard drive if it is set up as a secondary or slave drive or to a separate ATA/IDE channel by a second cable.
Find an empty CD drive slot, remove the plastic cover from the outside, slide the drive in through the back and screw it in place.
If you are using a SATA CD burner, you'll need to connect the red SATA cable from the CD drive to the SATA connection on the motherboard or on your SATA drive controller card.
With SATA drives, you don't have to fool with jumpers.
Attach one end of the separate ATA/IDE cable to the motherboard if you have an IDE drive and the other to the back of the CD burner.
If slaving the drive, hook the drive to the second connection on the main hard drive cable to the burner drive.
If you do that, you'll have to set the jumpers on the CD drive to the "slave" position.
The drive's installation instructions will show you where the jumper pins are and how to set them to the slave position.
If using a separate IDE cable, just leave the jumpers in the factory setting.
If this is an older drive, you may have an analog audio cable as well that connects to the motherboard.
Follow the installation instructions for hooking it up.
Close the case and reconnect the power cord and other cables.
Turn on the computer and let it boot up.
Open the "My Computer" folder and make sure there is a new icon for the drive that you just installed.
XP will generally recognize it automatically, but if it doesn't you'll have to reboot the computer and open the CMOS setup program.
Follow the instructions for your particular PC to open the CMOS window.
Check the ATA channels to make sure both are enabled in setup and that, if you are using a master/slave setup, that the CMOS selections match that setup.

Reboot the system.
If the CMOS settings are correct, the XP operating system will set your drive so that it uses either digital CD playback (no audio cable) or analog playback (with audio cable). To check, open the "My Computer" window, choose "Properties" then "Hardware" then "Device Manager".
You'll see a "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" icon.

Click the plus sign next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives folder.
Click it, then right-click the icon for the new CD burner drive.
Now choose "Properties".
If you don't have an audio cable, left click on the selection box for "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device".

Insert the CD burner software disk that came with your CD burner.
Insert the disk that came with the drive into the CD drive and install the software following the prompts.
If the drive doesn't come with CD burner software, Windows XP comes with a lite version of Roxio's Easy CD Creator that detects blank CDs.
Just insert a blank CD in the burner and XP offers you a "burn CD" option when you have autoplay set up for the CD-drive.

There are lots of freeware burning software on the internet.

I have purchased a new hard drive for my desktop, when the last one crashed I had a friend come over and show me how to change it . This is a few months later and now I have it opened up and I'm not sure...

If both plugs are connected, open "My Computer".
Do you have an icon for the C: drive,
an icon for the CD/DVD drive,
and *ANOTHER* icon for the *SECOND* disk-drive?

If so, copy all the "good" files from the *SECOND* drive to your "My Documents" folder.

Then, shutdown, disconnect the AC power from the computer, and then disconnect the power-cable and data-cable that connects to the "old" disk-drive.
Reconnect the AC power, and restart.

Lacie not working

Does your drive make any unusual sounds like any of these: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?
If yes then you got a problem - it's something mechanical with the heads.
If it sounds normal or doesn't spin up at all - try to connect it to another computer and if still no go - remove the internal drive from enclosure and connect directly to PC via SATA port.

Don't remember how to use

I also have a Monsoon 320GB hard drive.  There is a power cord that attaches to the hard drive and the power source, make sure that the drive is turned off, plug the power cord in to the drive and the power source.  Mine came with two types of connectors to connect the hard drive to the computer.  Firewire to Firewire and a usb cord.  Use one of the cords to connect the hard drive to the computer.  Then turn your drive on.  If an icon doesn't show up on your desktop you can restart your computer, that usually works for me.  The drive functions just like your internal hard drive.  If you want to save files on the external drive just choose that option when saving a file.  Hope this helps.

Recent Dvd player was connected to computer. However computer does not recognise it

Do not edit the Registry - any mistake here will crash your computer and may require a reinstall of Windows and all other programs!

RIGHT Click My Computer - select Properties - select Device Manager - then RIGHT Click the DVD drive listing - select Update Driver (have your disk ready).

This should solve your problem.

Good luck.
