I know this link is old but the same problem happened today to my new device a s4
I tried to update the device and the update program stopped halfway through.I tried this several times and each
time after the program stopped dead halfway through I pressed the cancel button and followed onscreen prompts,
I then noticed that the device would not respond and was just a dead piece of kit.It seems that it was still in
DFU mode(update mode)and needed the software to install an update to get it to work again.
It seems that the problem could be how the device reacts to the type of motherboard I have on my PC.BluAnt mention
issues with ASUS boards on their site wioth another device.
at the office. So after dozens of tries to get the s4 to update using the downloaded updater from Blueant,
I went into Windows Explorer and found the directory 'BluAnt Universal Updater' I copied the directory to my
memory stick and then took it home. On my PC at home I copied over the BAUU directory. Downloaded and ran the updater program
....and.....it installed the update within a couple of minutes. It seems that the update program downloads the update to a
directory within the BAUU directory and also places a 'Backup' directory there from your device, so if a problem occurs you can
tell the updater program to update from a file on your hard drive. Please pass this 'fix' on.

What is dfu mode and how do you do it

You enter dfu mode so iTunes can detect an iPhone in recovery mode and then prompt you to restore. You will lose all your files when you do this but if you have a backup in iTunes then you're good to go. To enter dfu mode, just press both power and home buttons simultaneously for exactly 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, release the power but keep holding home then wait until iTunes detects your iphone and prompt you to restore.

My computer cant detect my iphone4 when its plugged in and it wont turn on or charge

Once you upgrade the firmware. You can not go back. To bring the phone back at least from black screen. You have to keep trying to reboot in dfu mode.I am assuming you jail broke your phone, so you might have to use that software to bring it back up with that.Good Luck

Apple iphone 1st generation

That is DFU mode. It's there for software upgrading/downgrading. If you can't get out of this mode, reloading the firmware from Itunes will release it.

Open up Itunes.
Connect your IPhone.
Select your IPhone in the left window frame.
Press the "Check for Updates" button located in the summary frame.
Click "Download and Install."
Don't disconnect it while it's doing it's thing.

Once it finishes you will be out of DFU mode.

Hope this helps,
BReady

I recently updated the firmware for my ipod touch [2nd gen] and now its stuck on the apple logo and won't do anything else. When i try restarting it, it just goes to the apple logo and then does nothing....

So you've upgraded to the latest 3.1.3 version.
You can still try to put your iPod to DFU mode, that way, iTunes (from your computer) will recognize your device. See link to my instructions below.
But since you have the latest firmware (3.1.3), the only thing you can do, once your device is in DFU mode is to repeat the update. You MUST NOT follow the rest of the rest of the instruction about restoring to 3.1.2, coz that might be fatal. Just REPEAT THE UPDATE. REPEAT THE UPDATE. And wait patiently until your iPod opens normally.
See complete instruction here.

1. Remove the batteries. While holding the 2 button down, connect the USB cable. The remote will boot into normal mode.
2. Update the firmware. Update the configuration.
3. There could be a stuck button on the remote causing the symptom. Remove the batteries from the remote. Push in, and massage each button ensuring it is not stuck down. Replace the batteries and Update the firmware. Update the configuration.
4. Remove the batteries from the remote. Manually place the remote into `Safe Mode` by holding off and plug in the USB. Upgrade the firmware in the remote. Update the configuration.

Error 1604 and Kernel Panic

confirm that your firmware is compatable with your iphone.
if you have a 2G the firmware should start with 1.1 if you have a 3G the firmware should start with 1.2
apparently unlocked or jailbroken phones with the wrong firmware will brick in this manner.
not to worry, your not the only one.
do a web search for error 1604 and you will see solutions such as this below.

  • Problem: I cant restore my custom firmware. I just get error 6, 1, 2, (something low).
Solution: This has multiple causes. Generally, you are not in DFU mode. See DFU guide. Winpwn solution after ruling out the above: Delete the device file (x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw) in your iTunes folder. (Search for the file). This can also be caused by using the incorrect firmware image (a 3g on a 2g for example).
    ———————
  • Problem: I am in DFU mode and I just get error 1604, 1602, 1601 (some 160x). I am pulling my hair out! What do I do?!
Solution: This one sucks. There’s no single answer for it. Here are some possible suggestions:
    • Validate you are using the correct firmware. You can get this if you are using an incompatible firmware (3g for 2g for example).
    • Restart your computer and try again.
    • Try another computer
    • Try switching USB ports
    • Uninstall and reinstall iTunes 7.7
If you are not able to get out of DFU mode even after trying one of the above fixes, click here to follow the comments on BigBoss’s website.

Iphone will not restore

Try restoring in DFU mode, which is different than recovery mode. I happened to stumble across it while trying to restore an iPhone 3G that a user unplugged in the middle of the 3.1 update. It kept showing an error of 1611 or 13 and wouldn't restore in recovery mode. I found this DFU mode option and the restore worked fine. The DFU mode keeps the iPhone OS from loading, so you don't run into as many compatibility problems. Go into DFU mode, then try restoring the phone and see if that works.
http://techierambles.blogspot.com/2009/09/restore-iphone-with-error-13-or-1611-in.html
To enter DFU mode:
1. Connect your iPhone to your computer
2 . Turn iPhone off. You may have to hold the power and home buttons down together to force the phone off
3. Once the phone is off, hold the power and home buttons together for 10 seconds exactly
4. After 10 seconds, release the power button but keep holding home until the computer recognizes that a USB device was plugged in
5. iTunes should detect your iPhone correctly, and also allow you to restore to the factory default settings
