Kiwkset can't determine which side the deadbolt should lock. Read an answer on FixYa that said "Reverse the battery" but I knew that wouldn't power it up at all. Help?

please give more info ( which side the deadbolt should lock )(?) --- I take it that you have a keypad Kwikset deadbolt ? I have been a locksmith for 18 years --- give me some more info on what you are trying to do and I will do my best to walk you thru it.

Thanks! When I'm facing the door the hinges are on the left, and the Kwikset dealbolt is on the right door knob. The door opens towards me. The Kwikset can't figure out that the deadbolt should lock the other way, and keeps jamming or "clicking." I followed "Bolt Direction Determination" steps over and over. Pressed the program button 3 times and inserted the battery while holding the "lock" button. I can manually lock the door though, so everything should be working right? Any info would be great! Thanks again!

Well, if you are able to use the deadbolt manually ( with key and the inside latch ) then it sounds like everything is lined up right. the only thing that I can think of is that the computer needs to be re-programed and/or the spindle was in the wrong position when the hardware was put together(?) --- if I remember right, the deadbolt bolt needs to be retracted when everything is put together. if I had the directions in front of me I could walk you through the reset process ,, but I am not at the lockshop, I am out in the middle of nowhere Alaska taking care of a lodge for the winter--- but if you can e-mail me the exact model number of the lock I will pull up the info and then I can walk you through it. there is a way to totally erase all info in the lock and start from new. I do know what you are going through and I have ran into this problem before on the job -- I just can't remember everything about the Kwikset manual ( we mostly installed Schlage hardware and their programing is a bit different ). again, send me the model number and we can go from there. thanks,

I have looked high and low for the manual on-line,, but found nothing. so from memory all I can remember is that on the inside of the lock there is a reset button. remove the lock from the door and press the reset button and when you go to put everything back together - make sure that the latch is in the right position ' UP ' and make sure the spindle is in the right direction. tighten ( not to tight ) -- now put the batteries in the unit and put the inside plate on. now - extend the bolt in and out and make sure all is moving freely ( use the inside thumb turn and try and use the key ),, if all seems to be working -- retract the latch and from the outside, hit the lock button and see if it extends the latch, retract the latch using the thumb turn, now try and program in the code that you want. hit the lock button again and then try and use the code to retract the bolt ( leave the door open while trying this ). if you look at the manual see if it says something about the orientation of the tail piece when installing and extention or retraction of the bolt during install,, ( again, I have installed more Schlage keypads then Kwikset keypads and they are slightly different from eachother ). I will continue to look for a manual so I can see if there is something I can remember. also look at the section in the manual where it talks about swing of door ( handing ),, the secret might be there too. it makes me mad because I know if I had the thing in my hand that it would all flash back to me in a second --- again, I will keep looking.

Double cylinder deadbolt, bolt stuck in jam

You will have to remove cylinders from both sides of door, then stick a phillips screwdriver thru the bolt and push the screwdriver toward the hinge edge of the door.Might take a bit of pressure, depending on how hard its wedged into the jam, and you might break the bolt, but thats about the only way to get it out.try to determine why it got stuck before installing new one.

The lock has reversed itself. I just replaced the batteries and now the door unlocks pressing the lock button and only locks when I put in the code.

Did you accidentally remove the jumper that determines the "handedness" of the lock?

First remove the cover on the inside of the Powerbolt unit. On the right hand side under the batteries, you will notice that is says "Door Direction Jumper". If the cap is mounted on Prongs 1 & 2, carefully remove it and move it over so that it mounts Prongs 2 & 3. A is right handed, B is left handed.

Here's a link which tells you how to remove the cover, and reprogram the lock codes:

My Kwikset Electronic Deadbolt is working in reverse. When I push the lock button it retracts the deadbolt. When I put in the access code it extends the deadbolt. What is wrong?

My lock did not have jumpers, but adjusts itself automatically... You have to hold the lock button in (on the exterior side) while you insert the battery pack - the deadbolt will cycle in and out, then beep a couple times. You'll be holding button for maybe 10 seconds.
I have to say while this step is included in the instructions in a big red box, it says nothing about why or what its doing, so I imagine many people miss this...

Weiser powerbolt worked well for several months but now is not reliable anymore. Changing batteries did not help. It sounds like it is locking but sometimes fails to lock...we cannot trust it anymore

Hi... You have too be sure that the deadbolt is free when it go inside the deadbolt hole... however this system is very low power and the (over torque clutch) will sleep if the deadbolt it's not completely free.
Also if you try to open the door before you unlock it, you may block the the deadbolt inside the deadbolt hole. Take care too unlock the door before open-it...

When i try to lock or open with key pad it will make the sound like its closing but the bolt does not move. can only lock and open with key.

The deadbolt may very free inside the deadbolt hole... This system is low torque and a over torque clutch may slip if the dead bolt it's not completely free inside the deadbolt hole... Also, if you try to open the door before to unlock it, you may block the deadbolt... take care to unlock the door before open it. to be sure that the dead lock is ok, you can turn the manual knob and be sure is turning very very easily.

Also are you no that POWERBOLT is a 3 codes memory? go to that link to see more info about that :

Schlage Secure key deadbolt is seized up. The reset key will not move at all in the lock. It is supposed to move 30 degrees to the left to reset the lock. It worked once. We have been using our front...

The best way to free up a lock is with graphite powder. Give it a good dose (put down some newspaper first to catch any falling particles) and "puff" it in. Do this several times, working the key between times and after. If it is still stubborn, loosen the interior bolts that hold the halves together. Loosen just enough so that the halves can re-orient themselves slightly (called "wiggling in"). You'll find a spot where the lock works smoothest. Tighten up the blots, but don't over tighten. Continue to work the key until you're satisfied that the position is as good as you can get it. Graphite is available at Lowe's, Home Depot or even Hobby Lobby (used for Pinewood Derby cars). Same stuff. By the bye, you should use graphite on all your locks from time-to-time. It keeps the cylinder, springs and pins freed up, making the action of the locks very smooth. I never work on a lock without adding graphite powder first.

Do you know how to reprogram digital code?? kwikset 907 lock

1) Remove back cover (instructions usually are stuck on the inside of the back plate cover .. if not continue next ...
2) Make sure all batteries are fully secured.
3) Press the square Reprogram button
4) Press the keypads of your code. If you do not hear any sound when pressing the buttons, then it means your batteries are not fully secured.
5) After entering your code, press the middle keypad (lock) once.
6) To double check things are working right, then press the keypad buttons again and then when you see the deadbolt is unlocked, then press the middle keypad (lock) again to ensure the deadbolt comes out to lock.

Recommend periodic lubrication of the deadbolt lock for less strain on the batteries ,,, and lubricate the key lock occasionally as well.

Bolt doesn't open all the way

You should replace your batteries as the motor that moved the deadbolt does not have enough power to move it with weak batteries. If that fails make sure the deadbolt moves freely when the lock is removed as the mis-aligned mounting will cause excessive force be exerted to move the deadbolt. See
