    Hi there,

The freezer section of my Maytag MFD2560HES is defrosting everything that was frozen but the fridge seems okay. Does this mean the compressor is okay (compressor covered by a 5 yr warranty)? What could be the problem? Any help is appreciated. Thank You.

i have the same problem with the freezer on my maytag MFD2560HES. had a repair man come out today (1/10/09) and he said it was my compressor. repair man said it was a batch of bad compressors and it looks like we got one of them. he's checking to see if we are still under warranty for this problem

I have exactly the same problem. I've heard that the compressor is under warranty from Maytag for five years.

Hi andy, based on your story, i think the humming sound is coming from the compressor trying to start and the clicking sound is when the overload trips and make that clicking sound to turn off the compressor but it does resets itself so it would humm again after a few minutes and tripps off again..try to unplug the unit for a day to cool off the compressr and then plug it back. if it will happen again, you need to replace the compressor. i hope i was able to help..

Suspect that the rubber boot that runs all around the edge of your freezer door is deformed, allowing warm air to seep into your freezer. You will see where your temp sensor is located by clicking into the site of a parts supplier like ShopJimmy.com and pulling up their photo of the guts of your unit.

Freezer side not cold enough, similar temperature as Refrigerator side

It could be many things. My first guess would be the defrost. The coil that gets cold in your freezer builds ice on it and the only way to get the ice off is to run a heater near the coil long enough for the ice to melt. All freezers have something built in to defrost and domestic are typically just an electric heater on a timer. When your freezer stops working again, you may want to pull open the panel of your freezer and see if your coil (a heat exchanger that probably looks a lot like your car radiator) is covered in ice. If it is, it could be the timer or the actual heater that is bad.

If it won't freeze the cubes that because the freezer section is not cold enough to freeze them. the ice maker itself dose not have any cooling in it. it all comes from the freezer. sounds to me like there may be a problem with the ice maker and it may need to be replaced.

Can you feel air moving or hear the fan running in the freezer section? You said the freezer section is freezing well, but is it freezing really hard?

Compact refrigerators that have a freezer compartment do not have seperate controls since they are cooled by the same evaporator and it is not designed to reach true freezer temperatures. It should get cold enough to freeze water for ice. If it were allowed to get much colder there would be problems preventing the refrigerated section from getting too cold. Therefore, you will have to find a setting that provides a good compromize. You should be able to keep frozen dinners and such cold enough to prevent them from thawing but I would not store meats too long in that freezer and ice cream will get soft. I hope this answers your question. - Subdriver

There is a fan that blows cold air into the refrigerator. It usually stops when the door is opened. Check to see if it might be frozen with ice if the humming sounds abnormally loud. Usually if it freezes up you cannot hear the fan running and the refrigerator will not get cold enough.

Fridge does not keep cold, but freezer is over freezing, icemaker not making ice also.

You should be able hear, and feel the air from, a running fan inside the cabinet, in either side. The common arrangement is having the coils located (behind the wall) in the freezer section and then the fan moves a controlled amount of the frigid air to the refrigerator section via openings located in the rear of the compartment. The vents are normally adjustable so the temperature can be balanced between the two compartments.  If there is no noticeable air coming from this vent, then the fan has died.
