Are you using your own wireless router? If so, you would be the one who would have set up the passphrase. If you're piggybacking on your neighbor's router, you'll have to ask your neighbor for the passphrase (tactfully, I would guess).

In short, you must be able to access the router's setup screens to get or change the WPA encryption passphrase.

The encryption key (WPA passphrase) is in your wireless router, without this key the wireless router won't allow the laptop or XBox to connect to this wireless router.
The WPA, or WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to the XBox wireless settings and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

I would need to know the model number of the Axesstel router to be of assistance. I can maybe then give you step-by-steps on how to set up your WPA and then get the Xbox to connect.

I have tracked down the user manual for your router. If you wish to download/read it, it can be found at this link:
    http://www.nteloswireless.com/1pdfs/MV40...

The instructions specify that you must use the "Advanced User Interface" of the device to access the WPA settings (among other settings). To use the Advanced User Interface, you must have a User Name and Password specifically for the modem, and these must be obtained from your service provider. Once you have been issued that information, you can access the WPA key codes etc.

    I hope that is helpful.

I need a pass phrase or network key to be able to log on to my wireless internet connection for my laptop.

Hi,
Good day. If your looking for your looking for the pass phrase or network key for your router. You can try to do the following.
1. Check for a WEP key on the router itself. Usually it is on a sticker located under the router or at the back of it. 2. You can go to the router page using your internet explorer or mozilla > just type in 192.168.1.1 on your browser > it will ask for a username and password > username: leave it blank password: admin > then go to wireless setting > then it will show you your WEP or WPA or Wireless key > Dont be confuse the wep or wpa or pass phrase are all the same > then just type it on the space where its asking you to type in a pass phrase and that should work
3. If still you can locate it you can contact your internet service providers technical support department and they will be able to walk you through it

Hope this information will be helpful in resolving your concern. Have a great day and thanks for using fixya.

Want to set password so only computers with password can use it

If the router hasn't been accessed before it is simple. Just open your web browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 a window will appear and ask for a user name and password. Leave the username bland and type ADMIN in the password. This should get you into the router configuration. Just look at the top navigation bar and look for wireless. Once there look for security. Once there you can "name" the network and choose a pass phrase. Make sure to SAVE CHANGES. Once done then any computers wishing to access your network (internet) will have to have the pass phrase. I use WPA personal and TKIP pass phrase. You can also disable the SSID broadcast, so that no one can search for your network.

How do I secure wireless router ... currently open .. I'm attempting to restrict piggy-backing for security reason.

Which router do you have. You have to first open the administration page of the router. Better to do it with a laptop or computer attached to the router physically with a cable as the wireless configuration might corrupt data as the router will disconnect when you change the security setting. Default ip for router's are 192.168.1.1 , you can see your manual for the correct address and even the username and password would be provided in the documentation. Once inside the administration select Wireless and then Wireless Security may change according to manufacturer. Here you have many choices like WEP or WPA, i think for home networks WPA is a better choice as WEP is easier to break. Select TKIP under that, then you should enter a pass phrase. This is going to be like your password. It has to be minimum 11 characters long.Save settings and check if the pass phrase is asked for when connecting to your router. If it does you have secured your wireless connection.

Router wrt54g2 wont connect to my ho laptop asks for key or passphrase and when in put in key starts doesnt match my laptop security network

You have set up the security on the router itself so that nobody can steal your signal. When you did this you made up your own key/pass phrase. If you go back into the setup screen for the router you can look under the wireless tab then click on wireless security. Depending on what security you set up be it WPA Personal, WPA Enterprise, WPA2 Personal, WPA2 Enterprise or WEP it will show the shared key that you made up. You must enter this key in on your laptop EXACTLY how it is typed in the box in the routers information page.

You can find the wireless password also called wep key or wpa pass phrase through the set-up page of the router. If you don't know how to access it, follow the instruction in How to Access the Router's Setup Page (just click it.)

What if i want to secure it. do i need the cd?

Im not sure what you are saying is your problem.

To secure your wireless network you first need to log into your routers configuration settings to do that in your address bar of your browser type http://192.168.0.2 enable either WEP or WPA security and tell it what security key or pass phrase to use.

Then on your computer when you try to connect to your wireless routers signal it will ask you to put in the security key or pass phrase you selected and thats that. You are secure.

What is wpa pass phrase while setting wireless printer

WPA with a Pre-Shared Key (PSK), also known as personal. PSK is entered as a pass phrase between 8 to 63 alphanumeric characters in the ASCII format at both ends of the wireless connection. Although PSK accepts a minimum of eight characters, for proper security, it is a good idea to use ample length and should not use a commonly known phrase. This phrase is used to generate session keys that are unique for each wireless client.

WPA pass phrase is a password for the wireless network to make it secured. You can obtain the WPA pass phrase when you access your router. Check the manual of your router for the address, username and password of your router. Go to wireless settings, you will see ther the SSID or Network Name, Network Key or the Pass Phrase and Authentication (WPA/WPA2/WEP). You can personalize the SSID,Network Key and Authentication. Remeber that for you to connect wirelessly the Authentication and Network Key on the router should match the Network Key and Authentication of the Printer or Computer.

Thanks for using Fixya,

I have scanned for my internet and connected to it by typing in my wpa key. but when it comes to connecting the connection my ip address fail. do i type in my ip address manually? if so, where can i find...

First, make sure that DHCP is enabled.
Second, Don't use the pass phrase use the key.
  • For example, if you setup WEP to use a pass phrase like ROSEBUD, use the generated key code under it which would look something like AA34578E9...
