With no air in the tank and amp meter connected to one leg of line, start compressor and note amp draw thru cycle. It should draw low amps at first then reach rated amp draw close to end of cycle(most likely 12-15 amps). If amp draw is normal then replace thermal breaker. Older compressors have thermal breaker incorporated within winding and may not be easily replaced (but not impossible). If amp draw is higher than rated, check capacitor for proper rating and make sure that the in-tank check valve is not leaking pressure back to pump. Good holidays

My compressor will not turn on its just maken a clickin sound every 2mins

Sounds like the thermal over load in the motor is tripping and resetting. Cut the power and try turning the motor and compressor by hand. If either is tight, work and oil it to try to free it up. If neither is tight, the motor is probably bad.

Htachi ec89 Thermal Protection trips

Its your reset button on the compressor that's bad! I have the exact same compressor (EC89) and it did the same thing! Compressor would run great for 15-20 seconds, then trip the reset button. I ordered a new reset button off e-bay, replaced it, and it works fine now. Good overall compressor! but has cheep china electronics installed. just replace the reset button and you will be good to go....cheep fix!!!

My air compressor just stopped working completely, has power to it and can turn the fan so its not seized but was gonna start by checking the reset relay and what appears to be a capaciter. just looking for...

The first thing to check is the thermal protector (circuit breaker). It is a small black button mounted on the housing on the back side of the pump motor. The unit will have to cool down before the button will reset. Usuall causes for the thermal protector to pop are: running the compressor on an extension cord, running the compressor on power lines or circuits that can't carry enough amps to run the motor, or little or no oil in the compressor causing excessive friction and heat buildup. If the thermal protector isn't tripped the next thing to check is the pressure switch. If the springs inside are broke or damaged they won't trip the switch to turn the compressor on. If the capacitor(s) are bad the motor will hum and/or try to turn but not have the power to start spinning.

Trips thermal overload. power source ok. oil ok

Several things to check. Amp draw to be within number on plate, if amp draw not correct check capacitor, should be within 5% of rating on cap.. If amp draw about right and cap reads good suspect faulty breaker. If amp draw high and cap. good check for leak at in-tank check valve. With pressure in tank remove hose at check valve spray soapy water. If check valve good, suspect reed valves leaking. If reeds are leaking the compressor will take longer than normal to fill and the discharge tube/air will get very hot. It is recommended to note the amount of time it takes to fill tank when unit is new and compare this as unit wears. Length of time to fill is an indication of how well unit is working. A combination of leaky valves and leaking fittings as well as leaking checkvalve will cause motor to overheat.

Pump humms and barely turns. Fan blade caught wire caused huge spark. wire has been replaced.pump does not really seem to get going and trips safety after a minute of running.

hi there!
short circuited at start damage motor compressor
if you have a service center for motor compressor have checked this one, motor compressor has thermal overload protection mostly on single phase motor inside the motor,in the absence of overload protector the winding of motor on start and running maybe shor circuited.this should be rewind by motor rewinder.check the cost of motor rewind to a brand new motor.have choose n it.have a nice day fix my rate.

Hitachi EC12 won't refill air after initial startup

hi there,
of course comparative cost buying and repairing make a cost reduction.if your compressor run smooth but tripping, make sure where on the right path of diagnosing of your compressor,we can check if the motor or compressor is shutting off the unit.disconnect the belt from pulley of the motor to compressor, run the motor if still tripping w/o load its better if you have calmp ammeter test,to check the current rating,if it is tripping motor is deffective replace the bearing.f motor is fine sr till tripping check the compressor also the crankcase bearing, replace worn out bearing.have a nice day dont forget to fix my rate.thanks a lot.

My compessor wont start.

ALWAYS USE LARGE GAUGE CORDS FOR COMPRESSORS. LOOK FOR RESET BUTTONS OR THERMAL OVERLOAD BUTTON ON MOTOR. DID IT TRIP BREAKER OR GFI OUTLET?

Motor will not start

I had the same problem and the solution was to manually press the thermal overload button. The button is located under the tool box next the motor head. I do not believe I tripped the thermal overload during use, but I suppose anything is possible. I’ve been using the compressor in sub 40 deg F. temperatures. I found the following in the Owner’s Manual, but had to look at the part manual to locate the switch.
MOTOR THERMAL OVERLOAD
PROTECTOR: The electric motor
has a manual thermal overload
protector. If the motor overheats
for any reason, the thermal
overload protector will shut off
the motor. Turn pressure switch
to the “off” position and wait for
unit to cool before pushing the
reset button and restarting the
compressor.

Good Luck!
