Do you have your manual? I don't know what model you have, do you have a clutch on the handwheel that has to be pulled out to disengage the needle shaft? Do you have the bobbin pushed to the right ? Do you have the thread running the right way? If, you have checked all that, take the machine to Sears and ask a salesman for assistance. And it is free. They usually are pretty good in the sewing machine department because they never know if you want to upgrade or not.

Winding Singer Sewing Machine Bobbin

For ~$30, you can purchase a standalone bobbin winder from JoAnn's, Hancock's or even Amazon.com. It will allow you to wind your bobbins even if your machine is missing the appropriate parts. (Also saves wear and tear on your machine.)

When I wind a bobbin, it makes a screeching noise and the needle goes up and down. What step am I missing ?

On the right side is a big wheel and in the middle a smaller one. You need to unlock the smaller wheel so that the needle mechanism does not run when re-winding a bobbin. You need to use both hands to do it. Hold the bigger wheel and then loosen the inner wheel anti clock wise. Once you have finished loading your bobbin you need to tighten the inner wheel again for the machine to be fully functional again.

After I "undid" winding my bobbin, the electronic display still showed the symbol for winding bobbin and the machine will only sew straight. None of the other buttons like back stitch or change stitches...

are you sure you've moved the bobbin winding mechanism back to the right spot? if its still pushed over against the bobbin spool holder it may be stopping the normal functions from working. If that isn't the problem then it may be something for the tech at the Elna dealers.

Bobbins wind unevenly- tension issues

Sounds like it is actually the tension on the bobbin winder. Make sure that the thread is following the correct path to the bobbin. Other than getting it repaired, a stand-alone bobbin winder (avlb @ JoAnn's or online) for ~$30 would work. One brand is called the Sidewinder. Verify that your bobbins will work on it because some Singer bobbins will not. It's a nice accessory to have because it saves wear 'n tear on your machine plus you can wind bobbins without unthreading the machine.

FWIW, it is usually better to wind bobbins at a slower speed. Higher speed will tend to make the bobbin jump around and the thread to pop off. In addition, higher speed will tend to stretch the thread going onto the bobbin. The thread will not relax until unwound from the bobbin and stitched into your garment. It may cause the fabric to pucker as the thread relaxes. Slower is better!

You can either take the machine in for repairs or, use another sewing machine (if you have one that uses the same type of bobbin) for bobbin winding or purchase a Sidewinder Bobbin Winder - search the Internet for the best price.

Problems winding bobbins on my singer 4622 sewing machine

I have two possible solutions:
1. you have the wrong bobbin and it doesn't grip the winder.
2. the small spring on the winder spindle is missing or bent, it is what applies pressure to the bobbin for winding.

good luck!

Bobbin won't wind

I have checked the gears underneath and see no missing teeth for the bobbin part. The bobbin "seat" does raise, but does not engage. Thanks

Bobbin winder is only thing that works

What model are you talking about? For my older Husqvarna machine you had to pull the bobbin winding bit out to wind the bobbin, then push it back in when you were done.
