Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Cannot get RadioShack universal remote to connect with TV. Used codes listed time and again but with no success. Spent hours using automatic search, and, from time to time, the TV would switch off (indicating a "valid" code), but the TV would not, thereafter, operate by use of the remote. So, what do we do?

It was set by TV button, but it worked the very first time. It was like clock work.

Thank very much. I apologize for my frustration. It was a bit of pressure for me.
I was being criticized for paying money for what "any half wit should know is a
rip off." Every hour that passed was proof that I had done a dumb thing. Well,
you now you have established that it was not so dumb after all.

I will recommend your service to others. Thanks again.

Hi,

On most RadioShack universal remotes, when you are running the automatic search, you have to press a button within 2 seconds of the TV switching off or it skips to the next code. If you fail to press the correct button within 2 seconds, the TV wont respond when you subsequently test the code.

I am not sure which is the correct button for your remote as you did not specify the model number of your RadioShack remote. On many models, it is any button other than the "SET" button.

Although getting the TV to switch off is an encouraging sign, there is still the possibility that your RadioShack remote will not work with your TV. There are hundreds of universal remotes, hundreds of TV brands and thousands of different models. This makes for an incalculable number of potential
combinations of remote and TV and many of these combinations simply don't work together.

If you have tried all of the codes supplied for your TV brand and completed the automatic scan with no success, then it's likely that you have one of the combinations that doesn't work. However, you
should ensure you are "setting" the code in the remote as soon as the TV switches off. For correct operation, please consult the instructions for your remote.

It is also possible that a code for a different TV brand will work for you as many TVs are not manufactured by the company with their badge on the front. If you can discover who manufactured the original TV (base-unit), then codes for this brand will sometimes work.

If you would like further assistance, please post back with the brand and model number of both your TV and the RadioShack remote. I will then be able to check on the correct programming instructions for your remote and possibly determine whether codes for another brand will work.

Regards,
BElectric

    Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me. Firstly, I need to inform you that not all universal remotes will work with all TVs and/or other devices. However, it is encouraging that you are able to get the TV to switch off. This means that the remote is definitely communicating with the TV - and you are programming it correctly - but the correct code has not yet been found - if one exists.

The details you gave me for the TV trace back to an Orion/Sansui (same thing) TV/VCR combi. Therefore you should be using codes listed for Orion or Sansui TV/VCR combis. There is no code listed for an Orion TV/VCR combo, but there is one listed for Sansui: 443

Manual code entry instructions for TV/VCR combos:

    1. Switch on the TV

    2. Press and hold the "SET" key on the RadioShack remote. While holding this down, press and hold the "VCR/DVD" button. When the "VCR/DVD" button stays illuminated release both buttons. The remote is now in setup mode.

Please note: If you hold the buttons down for too long (more than 3 seconds), the remote will enter auto-search mode.

    3. Enter the code 4 4 3 using the numerical buttons on the remote. Pause briefly between each key press. The "VCR/DVD key should flash each time you press a numerical key and the light will switch off after pressing the final number. This indicates that the code has been accepted.

    4. Test the remote control with the TV. Check the common functions such as power volume and channels.

It is unclear whether your device is classed as a TV or VCR/DVD in the radio shack remote. Therefore you should also try entering this code on the TV setting. To do this, please repeat the manual code entry as described above, but use the "TV" button on the remote in step 2 instead of the VCR/DVD button.

If you have aleady tried these codes or they do not work, please post back for further assistance as there are some other options to try.

    Regards,

    BElectric

That's great! I'm very pleased you got it to work and that I was able to help. Universal remotes are definitely more of a black art than a science ;)

Thanks so much for the kind words. It makes doing this worthwhile. Personally, I would refund everyone who took the time to thank me and let me know that it worked but, unfortunately, that is not my decision.

Have you tested the remote with the VCR functions yet? You may need to enter a second code using the DVD/VCR button to make that work as well.

    Happy New Year to you!

Hi there,

Well your Philips universal remote control comes with a list of codes for devices by brand name.
Find the first code for the brand name and type of device you wish to program. Turn all of your devices off, and then manually turn on the device you want to program.
Press the Setup button on your the universal remote and continue to hold it down until the indicator light stops flashing and remains solid. Release the Setup button. Press the Mode button for the type of device you want to program on your Philips universal remote, such as the TV.Release it immediately and make sure the indicator light is illuminated. Enter the first possible four-digit code on the universal remote, and then press another button on the remote to see if the device is now programmed, such as the volume control or power button. If the device responds, you have successfully programmed your Philips universal remote. If not, turn the device off and back on and follow the steps again using the next code on the list. Repeat until the device successfully responds.

If your TV code is not listed on the manual then you can use the Remote Using Code Search Option -
Your Philips universal remote has a built-in code search feature that will find the correct code for your device. This process may take longer than using direct code entry, but can be helpful if you do not have access to the code list or if the brand for your device is not listed.

Make sure all of your devices are turned off, and then manually turn on the first device. Press the Code Search button and hold it down until the red indicator light stays illuminated. Press the Mode button for the type of device you want to program on your Philips universal remote, such as the TV button.  Release it immediately and make sure the indicator light is illuminated. Press either the Channel button until the device responds. You may have to press the button up to 300 times. Each time you press the button, the Philips universal remote tries a new code. When the code works, press the Mute button on the Philips universal remote and the code will be stored.

I thing you wrongly do the second option that creates the problem. No issue, if your tv code not listed on the manuals then you can go with the second (code search) solution. Please post comments for further help or information.........

Good Luck!!

Thanks
