Trouble starting my DELL inspiron 6400. The start up screen appears and then everything turns black. I have tried to restart in safe mode but the screen is stuck on the "DRIVERS/isapnp.sys". Not sure what to do next

It sounds like the windows has corrupted files, or a defective hard drive. If you have the original recovery disc then I would do a complete re-install of your operational system, failing this then the hard drive would be suspect.

Windows has crashed, some file required got corrupted. Your options are repair of the Windows or a clean install. Put the CD in and try to repair it, if that doesn't work you will need to do a clean install of Windows.

if it works fine in safe mode you should try a system restore . most of the time a problem that gos away in safe mode is driver related . IE software don't think you have a hard ware issue. you can call dell if you do not have the disk . 1-866-751-6079 call this number it's dell's Spanish tech support number but this is the fastest way to reach a real person at dell . just ask them to speak English and they will.

As it works ok in safe mode, I suggest you check that your graphics drivers are up to date.

You should be able to download the latest from the Dell website.

Dell Inspiron 6400 doesn't boot up properly, and won't turn off.

Try holding down Cntrl-Alt-Delete If that dosen't do it, and it's locked up, you should be able to pull the battery with minimal if any risk Profile settings must be set in administrator mode. Try booting in safe mode

Laptop ?

First try to boot in the safe mode, by repeatedly pressing the F8 key. If it boots into the safe mode, press the start button, shut down then select restart. If it will not boot normally then, repeat booting in the safe mode and once booted go to programs/accessorys/system tools/restore the select a restore point date that the computer was functioning correctly and restore for that date. If it will not boot the safe mode restart the computer with the system cd disk and restore from it. BPCS
