Try your tension at 3 and make sure that your thread is not old or tangled. Rethread, then with your presser foot up, pull the thread, it should move smoothly, now put the presser foot down, it should barely move when pulled. This usually seats the thread in the tension discs. If, still some problems, change your needle, it could have some burrs in the eye and is cutting your thread. Probably you should do that first.

Bernina activa 130 tension loose after needle breaking into bobbin area

Is it the bobbin tension that is very loose? Try tightening it. Also check that the bobbin has been installed in the bobbin case, turning the correct direction and that the bobbin tension is threaded properly.

Bobbin Tension How and Why Tension is Adjusted

Understanding Bobbin Tension

Understanding Thread Tension Threads

If it is the upper tension that is loose and creating "thread nests" under the fabric, the machine is either misthreaded or possibly the thread is not seated completely in the tension disk.

Remove the upper thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the upper thread from the beginning--verify the thread path is correct.
Set the upper tension to the midway point between high & low number (the factory standard--although it may need tweaking later for your particular machine).

Retest your machine. Hopefully, the issue has been resolved. If not, it may need service.

My lower bobbin thread commes up in verry loose stitches and breaking

Make sure you are threading both the top and bobbin correctly. HINT: Before you thread the upper thread, RAISE the presser foot so the thread will seat properly in the tension disk. Is your upper thread so tight that it is actually pulling the bobbin thread up? It also could be that either the bobbin case tension needs to be tightened, or the bobbin case itself could be broken (you can buy a replacement).

Also, try installing a brand new needle and changing thread brands. Avoid old, fuzzy, or bargain bin threads.

How to Adjust Tension on Sewing Machine Howcast

Just changed a broken needle, rethreaded everything but the threads in the top needles keep breaking

Remove all the thread. Loosen the upper tension as far as it can go and gently pull a length of UNwaxed thread or pearl cotton down through the tension disks to remove anything that may be stuck. Check that the needle has been installed facing the correct direction and that it has been inserted all the way up before the screw is tightened. Clean the bobbin area of any dirt, lint, or threads. RAISE the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread. This allows the thread to seat properly. Re-thread from the beginning. Set the upper tension to the midpoint and test.

If it is still happening, then try installing a brand-new needle (the one you have may be damaged or defective). If the thread is shredding before it breaks, then there may be a needle compatibility issue.

My thread keeps breaking after I sew just a little bit. I have changed thread, check it is put on correc. Please advise. Not sure if I have the top tension correct.

1. While threading put the foot up.
2. Give gentle tugs along the way. It should be without feeling any hangups.
3. Wherever the hangup is you must correct. Usually at the tension disc.
4 Sometimes the tension disc is tightening more than the indicator says. It should be about four. You can lower this tension setting until the stitch looks good.
5. You may have to take the tension assembly off and clean it thoroughly and sand any rusted spots.

Thread breaking on mega quilter

Upper thread breaks
needle may be in backwards
Raise the needle bar to the highest point, then loosen the clamp screw to remove the old needle, place the new needle in the clamp with the flat side to the back of the machine
round needle--the groove in the needle should face away from the shaft.
Push the needle all the way up to the stop or as far as it will go, then tighten the needle clamp screw
upper tension may be to tight try 3 to 5
the needle may be bent or damaged
thread may be hanging up in bobbin case--check area for loose threads or lint
