Question about LaCie Hard Disk 750GB with Hi-Speed USB2.0 750 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 750 GB hard drive. I cannot get it to open from the desktop, start, or from the program files. There was no installation CD that came with the device - only a "one click" installation wizard. I have tried to remove and then reinstall the software, but to no avail. I have checked the partition and it says "Disk 1 LaCie (F) healthy. Also the Hitachi disk drive appears to be there and the program files are in my C drive. I am running Widnows XP, SP3. Any suggestions?

Hi 7 sleven. Thanks again for your reply. I did uninstall the driver and reinstalled. Did not work. To answer your questions: 1. Yes, the HDD is used only for backup. 2. The software is what came with the LaCie device. It is called LaCie 1 Click Backup Software. 3. Yes, I can save a text file using Notepad and recover it from the external Hard Drive. 4. The backup files are in many formats because they appear on the HDD the same way as they are stored in the C Drive, for instance, word files, jpegs, etc. Thanks. Hourston

Hi hourston,
Not sure what you mean by "remove" but this is what I would try if it were me.
I would disconnect the drive from the computer. Go to the Device Manager (start > right click "My Computer" > click on Device Manager > click the + in front of Disk Drives. When you find the drive, uninstall the drivers. Shut your computer completely off. Boot the pc back up, and shut it down once again. Plug the HDD back in and reboot. It should be plug and play and reinstall.
Just checked Microsoft's website, says it is Windows compatible with no action required (Plug and Play)
Hope that helps...

    Hi 7sleven,
Thanks - I think the question I asked was phrased incorrectly.
The hard drive can be opened to view the contents, the problem is that when you click on the back-up icon, nothing happens and the drive will not perform a back-up. No activity registers on the task manager when I click the back up icon, but I can look at what is currently on the drive. Will uninstalling the drivers fix this problem?

    Hi Hourston,
Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver will not hurt, and it may indeed solve your problem. If that does not work, if you can answer some more questions I have, maybe I can help more.
    1. Is this HDD used only for backups?
    2. What backup software are you using?
    3. Can you save a simple .txt file to the HDD and reload it?
    4. Do you happen to know what format the backup files are in? If you can see the files, what are the 3 letters after the file name, ie somefile.???

Okay, so your backup program does not compress the file and store it, it just stores the file in the same format that the original programs save the file information in. Can you you use one of the programs, ie. Microsoft Office, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, to open any of the saved files by using the open file command and pointing it to the HHD that is used for backing up the files?

    Hi 7 sleven

    Hi Hourston,
Okay, we should have you up and running in no time. From what you have told me, there is nothing wrong with the HDD, is is working just as it should, this is good. Now what you need to do is open your Control Panel, then open Add/Remove Applications, find your LaCie 1 click backup software, and uninstall it. Next you need to download CCleaner from Piriform -
and install. It is free, there are two links you can use below the big green "Buy Online and Download" button in the middle, which is for paid support of the free program. Once you have it installed and open, click on the "Cleaner" tab if it is not already open. The program installs in safe mode so you do not have to worry about it removing anything critical to you OS. Look on Applications tab for anything in your browser that you might not want to be cleaned and unclick them. Click on "Run Cleaner" and let it clean. Next click on the "Registry" tab and clean everything, leave all the boxes marked. Click "Scan for Issues", after the scan, click "Fix selected issues" and let it clean everything. At some point it will ask you if you want to backup your Registry, select Yes and proceed with the cleanning. Make note of what file the bacup is in, just in case you need it. I've used this program many times on many systems and it has never failed. When it finishes, close and reboot the computer. After you reboot go to
and download the LaCie 1 Click Backup software and reinstall. Let me know how it goes.

What program do I use to open the backed up files?

What ever program you used to back up the files in the first place.

Did you use windows, or a different program ?

Are they stored on this
Verbatim 500GB USB Desktop 500 GB Hard Drive ?
When you use a program to backup a operating system, the program has the option to restore the system.

If you copied files onto another HDD, then you just copy them back.

You need to post what you used to do this.

Is it ok to defragment my 2T goflex portable hard drive?

Yes. Defragmenting simply takes the pieces of empty space on the drive and groups them together. When you delete data from a drive or it is deleted as part of a program's function (such as deleting files only needed during installation) it leaves a blank space, but files are lined up on the drive. So if the files are like so:

2GB File ' 3 GB File ' 5.5 GB Free Space ' 1.5 GB File ' 4 GB Free Space

Then defragmenting would try to rearrange the files like so:

2 GB File ' 3 GB File ' 1.5 GB File ' 9.5 GB Free Space

So, in short, yes, it's okay to defragment your drive.

How to get back to factory settings

Have you created your Application/driver cd from start, system recovery?

To recover your system from the hard drive:
1 Remove all CDs and DVDs from the disc drives, disconnect all USB devices
except the keyboard and mouse, then disconnect your Internet cable. If you can still run Windows, click Start, All Programs, System Recovery, System Recovery, then click Yes. Your computer restarts, then the System Recovery program starts.- OR -Turn on or restart your computer and press F11 while your computer is starting.3 Insert the Operating System Recovery CD/DVD when prompted. The System Recovery program starts.4 Click a system recovery option:??  Full System Restore (Destructive) reformats the hard drive and restores the system software as it was when you purchased your computer. This process deletes your data files. CautionThe Full System Restore option deletes allfiles on your hard drive except the restorefiles. Make sure that you back up allpersonal data files before continuing thisprocess.??  Full System Restore (with Backup) (recommended) moves the contents of the hard drive to the C:\My Backup folder and installs a new copy of Windows XP. This option saves your existing data files, but all programs must be reinstalled and the program settings reconfigured. You need at least 4 GB of hard drive space to use this restore option.5 Click Next. The System Restore - Format and Recover dialog box opens.6 Click Yes. Files are restored to your hard drive. When file recovery has finished, the System Restore dialog box opens. ImportantAfter you restore your system, it willappear with the same files and programsit had when it shipped from the factory. You still need to download Windowsupdates and antivirus updates to bringyour computer's software up to date.7 Click Restart. Your computer restarts, and Windows finishes its setup and installation.8 Reconnect your Internet cable and all USB peripheral devices. You are done.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

External questions

I think you are asking about applications like MS-Office. Then surely you can transfer applications to external hard disc.
But for that you need to reinstall that applications. On instalation the application will ask you for the path for instalation. Then select the path as your external harddisc. This will complete the instalation and create shortcut on your desktop or Start - Programs.
Very important thing is if you want to run such applications you need to verify that the external hard disk is connected and working properly.

Drive C, full

Save all your files, your disk is risking to collapse at any time.
You cannot efficently run Vista on a 10 GB hard disk.
Minim efficient size it will be 40 GB or so.

Delete as many useless files as you can, use the hard drive cleaning tool that you find under all programs/accessories/system tools.

To save your file you can use the backup option in control panel, and save all files to an external USB stick or external hard drive or, do not use CD RW because the disk is full and there will be no space for disk image on hard drive.

If you want to keep using Vista I suggest replacing the hard drive for a bigger one.
