Question about Brother MFC-8860DN Printer

Toner end life message

I replaced the toner in the MFC8860DN. It still displays a toner end life message and the machine will not work. I took the drum/toner assemble and placed it in another MFC8860DN and everything works, so the problem is in the original MFC, not in the drum/toner assembly. How do I reset the toner end life message so that the MFC knows it has a new toner in there? I am NOT talking about the drum.

I replaced the toner but it still says "Toner life end"

  • Anonymous Jan 29, 2009

My refilled toner gives "Toner End Life" message. I used it in another identical MFC-8860DN and worked well. Also, an original toner half way used from the second one which is working gives the same message on the first one. I don't believe there is a problem with the toner cartridge or any gear or spring in it. There is a code in the machine that has to be reset. Other models use clearing code of "*00" after pushing "option" key in the copy section of controll pannel. I can not find this key on MFC-8860DN. HELP?

I solved the brother mfc8860 toner life end problem
hi guys my name is reedwaan. Im new at this site so please listen up
my brother toner i refilled with toner and inserted it. It said toner life end then i patched the windows close on the sides and still the same problem, then i removed the toner and loosened the two screws on the left by the gears then removed the cover of the gears.
Right at the back there is a funny looking gear with a spring behind it. All you have to do is pull the spring a little bit clockwise and push the gear back on hooking the spring into it so that the gear is spring loaded. close it up then test it, It took me a while to figure it out but i got it right.
NB*  The gear that you push on, is the toner reset gear and when you push it on make sure the teeth dont interlock with the second gear on the left of it. If you have any queries mail me on reedwaan@yahoo.com
glad to help out

You can actually just remove the gear and spring. I posted this fix on another Brother printer. The good part of removing the gear and spring is you can print much longer too.

Toner light is on on Brother HL-2170 Laser Printer and the computer is not recognizing a print task. Can you help me fix this problem? Also, I just replaced toner a couple weeks ago.

I just replaced the toner cartridge and the Toner LED is still on, or the status monitor continues to display the message "Toner Life End". What can I do?

The yield of the TN330 toner cartridge is approx. 1,500 pages.
The yield of the TN360 toner cartridge is approx. 2,600 pages.
Approximate cartridge yield is declared in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752(Letter/A4).

Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

1. Verify you installed a NEW, out of the box, genuine Brother toner cartridge (TN360/TN330).

If a toner cartridge from another machine was installed (even if there?s still toner left in the used cartridge) or a starter toner cartridge (included with the purchase of a machine) was installed, the Toner LED will stay on and the message "Toner Life End" would continue to appear on the display.

2. Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly by following the steps listed below:

a. Open the front cover by pulling the tabs on the left and right side of the printer towards you.

b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on a piece of disposable paper or cloth to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.

c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock lever (blue tab) on the left side of the drum unit and lift the toner out. Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

e. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).

f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

g. Reseat the drum unit into the printer pressing it in securely.

h. Close the front cover making sure it latches on both sides.

If the Toner LED is still on or the status monitor continues to display the message "Toner Life End" the printer will need service.

The printer has a one year limited exchange warranty. If the printer is in warranty, call Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) for warranty options.

If the printer is out of warranty, contact a Brother Authorized Service Center for repair by clicking on the link below:

Depends on the usage of the machine. If hardly used, you should get a years worth. But here's what you can do:

Open front cover

Remove drum unit and toner cartridge assembly

Put drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in machine, but do no close front cover.

Press Clear/Back
You will get a message "Replace Drum?"
Select Yes to confirm

2. Press the "Options" key. Display will show "Replace Drum?"
3. Press "Start" key.
4. Press 1,0 .
5. Display will show "Accepted" for approximately 2 seconds. Then display will change to "Cover Open".
6. Close cover and see if Toner Life End error message has gone.
Please note that this must be done with a new cartridge so the unit will see that there is toner in the cartridge.

Brother MFC 8860DN Toner End Life Error

Open the door where the toner goes. Press the 'back' button. Press *00. Do not respond to the query about the drum. Close the door. Other models may have to press the 'Options' button located near 'Copy'. This should work.

Change of toner

I have a brother mfc 7840w

I first used the electrical tape trick and that worked for a while. Then got the toner low message again. I then tried the *00 trick, which works as follows:

1. lift lid and open front cover
2. press clear/back. "Replace Drum?" will appear on the screen.
3. Press "*00" it will then read accepted and the toner low error (End of Toner Life) should go away.
4. close it all up and your done.

Refill toner Brother MFC 7420

open front cover, press OPTION button, on the LCD will appear a message "NEW DRUM?" ....DO NOT RESPOND....just type on the keyboard "*00" and there will appear a message "Accepted" and use it in your pleasure.

PS. in any case i blocked with paper labels the viewing windows from transparent plastic on the toner itself....
