Question about Denon AVR991 Receiver

1 Answer

Hi there. I am trying to get my subwoofer to work with my denon 791 receiver. I have played around with a lot of the settings and cranked up the subwoofer volume on the actual sub but nothing is coming out. Any ideas??

It's not THAT easy. First, turn the volume down. We don't troubleshoot with maximum volume.

The receiver has to know about the sub and be configured to send some, if not all, bass t o it, then the levels have to be adjusted.

The manual for the avr791 is here:

http://www.retrevo.com/support/Denon-AVR-791-Receivers-manual/id/23693ag505/t/2/

You're going to need to be very familiar with it.

Starting at page 6 the manual talks about the automatic setup.

When they talk about defining the other speakers as Large vs Small later on, what they mean is not the literal Size, but if the speaker can reproduce bass or not.

I don't know what your sub is so maybe you could refere to ITS manual or find it at retrevo.com

In two channel mode, there will be no subwoofer signal unless you change the front speakers to 'small'. If you set the front speakers as 'large' then the full frequency spectrum will be sent to the front speakers, and none to the sub. Switching from bluray may keep the surround configuration until you restart as you mentioned.

I'm pretty sure you mean "LFE + Main".

You need to identify the speakers to the receiver as Large or Small regarding their bass-handling capacity more than their actual size.

"LFE" removes the possibly overloading bass in a given speaker channel containing 'small' speakers and sends it to the subwoofer.

"LFE + Main" is sort of explained on page 29 "Bass Setting". The intent of LFE+Main is to task your subwoofer with the bass that ALSO exists on all other speaker channels regardless of their ability to handle it all by themselves. As you can imagine, this might make the subwoofer respond to sonic events that are actually supposed to be directional from, say, the rear channel(s). In that case the event might seem to come from wherever the sub is located instead of the intended direction; or at the very least it might seem to come from both places which is probably not what the sound engineers intended when they recorded the piece.

Having full-range speakers 360-degrees around PLUS a subwoofer, I don't subscribe to the 'bass-is-non-directional' school of thought. If you've ever felt the concussion from and subconsciously glanced toward one of the speakers after, say, a huge explosion, the system is working.

I have a denon avr 791 and sometimes when I switch from a high definition source to a standard definition source or vice versa on my cable box the output of the receiver starts to flicker to static, then...

Are you using HDMI for the Hi-Def?
Sounds like you may be having an issue with the HDMI switching.
It could possibly be related to your cable box.

Here is Denon's website:

I suggest contacting them and seeing if your unit needs service.

Im trying to turn up the gain on my pioneer denon 791 and i cant find it. I've turned up my subwoofer on all of my DSP functions, but I cant find the gain. Can you help me?

"pioneer denon 791"???

Gain is volume. Does that help?

You should adjust all the relative speaker levels to the Front Speakers using test tones and usually leave them alone after that.

I have Harman Kardon speakers and subwoofers connected to a Denon AVr 1508 receiver. All my five speakers are working but my subwoofer doesnt work. I m pretty sure I have connected the subwoofer properly...

There is a setting under your speaker setup to turn the subwoofer on. If speakers are set to small it auto matically sets the subwoofer to ON. If the speakers are set to large it turns the subwoofer off but you can manually adjust.
