Question about Computers & Internet

Open Question

I cant get my computer to install the driver for my external Hard Drive. When i plug it in the computer and click my way trough the setup this error message comes up every time, and I have to abort. if i tell it to continue anyway, the device does not even register when I plug it in again. The software you are installing for this hardware: USB Mass Storage Device has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. (Tell me why this testing is important.) Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operating of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing. Continue Anyway or STOP Installation. What should I do to fix this problem?

Did you get the latest software from HP? Perhaps your install disk is an old version.
Try here:

SOURCE: My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

External drive not picked up on computer

External hard drives not only provide additional storage space on a computer system but also allow data to be conveniently transported from one computer to another.

These drives typically plug right in to a port on the computer and function without any additional setup; however, if you are running into trouble where your external hard drive is not being detected, you must troubleshoot the situation to determine why the drive appears to be missing.

Check the USB connection running from the hard drive to your computer.

If the USB cable is not seated securely in the port, the computer will not detect the external drive.

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and plug it into a different USB port. Occasionally, a USB port will fail to function with some hardware and changing the USB connection may correct this issue.

Switch from a USB to a Firewire cable connection, if possible.

The USB port on the hard drive may have died; if so, changing to a Firewire connection will resolve this issue.

Install the driver for the external device from the installation disc provided with the product. Older computer systems may require you to manually install this driver.

After inserting the installation CD, follow the prompts from the installation wizard to install the driver on your computer.

Restart the computer.

If you connected the external drive while the computer is powered down, it may not recognize the device when you turn on the computer.

After restarting the computer, connect the external drive to the system.

The drive should now be detected by your operating system.

Connect the external hard drive to a power source and then plug it into your PC computer using a USB or Firewire cable.

Log on to your PC computer using an account with administrative privileges.

Open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.

Open the "Administrative Tools" folder and then double-click on the "Computer Management" icon.

Select "Disk Management" from the list of options on left side of the window.

Right-click on the drive you want your computer to recognize and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths."

Select a drive letter for the external hard drive to be recognized as and click "OK."

The drive will now appear in My Computer.

Hope this helps.

Try connecting it to a different computer.

EXACTLY what error-message do you get?

When you double-click that entry in Device Manager, and click "reinstall drivers", allow Windows to connect to the Internet to look for a device-driver for the USB-to-disk-drive adapter (no device-driver is needed for the disk-drive itself).

My computer doesn't recognize my external hard drive and I don't have the CD to install it again. What do I do?

Try the external hard-drive in another computer.
If that computer also refuses to recognize it, then there is something wrong with the external hard-drive.

the hard drive you have is plug n play.
if windows does not recognize it, you may have to uninstall the hard drive.
right click your computer. click properties.
click on the "Hardware" tab. Click on "Device Manager".
open the category of "Disk Drives".
If you see your drive with a yellow exclamation point or a red "X", continue. If it does not, either it was dropped or its a faulty drive.
Right click your drive and click "Unistall". Click OK.
Now, unplug the drive and plug it in again.
it will install by itself.
Go to my computer and check that its there. If its not, you may have a bad drive. either send it for a new one (if still in warranty) or replace it.
