The hard drive needs to be formatted to FAT32. Not many hard drives ship in this file system anymore. To make a hard drive use FAT32, you'll have to reformat it. Delete everything off the drive and then run Command Prompt on your computer. Then type "format (drive letter): /FS:FAT32" without the quotes. This process will take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on drive capacity.
Once you have a compatible drive, you'll need to make files named "PICTURE", "MUSIC", and VIDEO" for each specific file type.

Pull the harddrive out, install in an economical external enclosure.
The external enclosure has a USB cable.

Plug the USB cable into any available USB port, on a working computer.

Go to My Computer, or Computer; and double-click on the drive letter, that corresponds with the external enclosure.

(Actually with the harddrive in that external enclosure, it is now an external harddrive)

http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=PCVR539DS&LOC=3#/howtoTab

It's an IDE harddrive. Also known as a PATA harddrive.

A harddrive is measured across it's width.
2-1/2 inches across is a laptop harddrive.
3.5 inches across is a desktop harddrive. (3-1/2 inches)

So you need a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure.

Hi Andrea I have just connected a hard drive to my Laptop and it isn't recogized.. can you help. I'm running on Windows XP Thanks Ian

Not Andrea, just wanted to offer;

1) Installed a new larger Harddrive for the laptop?
There is a special procedure for this. Depends on what laptop we're discussing here.
A new harddrive will have no operating system on it. BIOS needs to recognize the harddrive.

{When you press the Power On button of your laptop, the first chipset to receive power is the BIOS chipset. BIOS looks to see what devices are installed, does a Ram Memory count, turns the Processor on, and hands the laptop over to the Operating System. WinXP is one example of an O/S }

Some laptops have a procedure where basic info is stored until the new harddrive is installed. Then the basic info is transferred to the new harddrive.

In any case I suggest going into the BIOS Setup, and on the main page see if the Harddrive is recognized.
It will be listed.
If it isn't listed you have to manually set the harddrive's parameters. (Type them in)
The Cylinders, Heads, and Sectors.

When BIOS recognizes the harddrive, then you can install Windows XP off of the Restoration Disk, (Repair. Also know as Non-Destructive Installation), or a fresh, new genuine copy.

2) If this is a reference to an external harddrive, there may be an electronic problem with the unit.
The main problem that happens with an external harddrive, is the small circuit board inside goes bad.

This small circuit board is an Interface Board.
It connects to the Harddrive inside the case of the external harddrive, and allows a USB cable to be used.

If this is found to be the problem simply remove the harddrive inside, and install it into an economical external enclosure.

Awaiting further information so I know what we are dealing with.

A) Is this a reference to a new harddrive being installed into the laptop?
If so, laptop manufacturer name, and Model Number.
(Bottom of laptop in a white Service Tag, or sticker)

B) Is this a reference to an extermal harddrive?
Manufacturer name, and Model Number

My PS3 is broken and It will not turn on any more do to blunt trauma and i want to get the info off my hard drive how do i do this can it be done.

If you mean you want to transfer the files from that ps3 to another, all you have to do is remove the harddrives in both units, and swap them. If you want to have the harddrive in the new unit instead of the old one, once you have the old harddrive in the new unit simply use the backup function and backup to an external harddrive. In either case keep the extra drive because ps3 harddrives have a tenancy to die (I'm on my third drive)
Heres a video on how to remove the drive:

My PS3 doesn't recognise the linkstation???

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. if your External drive is not detected by your Ps3 console you need to format it and select Fat32 File system. Ps3 will not recognize external harddrive using NTFS Format make sure you format the drive using Windows XP or Windows 7. Windows Vista dont have Fat32 but Exfat File format. After you format the drive to Fat32 make sure you create a folder like Music, Photo, Video and other forlders so that it will be detected by your console.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Im trying to download off internet, but the"connect storage media at save destination" screen pops up? what do i need to do?

hello,
(if you are downloading to an external harddrive) i have had the same problem. the message basically means the system does not recognize the external drive and you are going to have to partition the drive into FAT32 format because that is the only format the ps3 will recognize.(some computers do not run off FAT32 so you may need to use a program called "swissknife"[it can be found on google]). once you have the partitioning complete you may plug the drive back into the ps3 and the system can now recognize it and you may proceed in downloading your content.
i hope i have helped, please feel free to let me know how it works out, thanks

Acomdata external harddrive is not recognize on vista

I had a similar issue with windows 2008 and windows 7. the drive lost all its info and had to be reinitialized under both of those O.S.'s..
You can try that as long as it doesn't have any data you need.. Once you do that the drive will work and you can start using it. The file system under vista and above is slightly different than xp.
