What does back-up to sd card mean?

the camera has internal memory and also will have the option for external memory. If you have a sd memory card in the camera you can backup the internal memory to the sd card.
Then you can remove the sd card and put in a new sd card and you now have an sd card with your precious photo memory's copied from the camera internal memory. You may have a camera that allows two sd cards one for the photos and one to back up the photos. If you had your camera stolen or lost you would lose all the photos on the camera but with a backup sd card you still have the photo files. Also a p.c with a card reader device could read the files on the sd card and you could copy them into a cloud storage on the net or onto a network storage device or onto a usb portable drive with 2 terrabyte capacity .

Took pictures with m dane-elec 8gb then it told e i need to format.will i lose all my pictures

Yes, formatting removes all the data. However, the photos might be on the camera's internal memory and not the SD card.

If possible, connect the camera to a computer and copy the photos onto the computer, then you can safely format the SD card.

If you cannot connect the camera to a computer, you will need to take out the SD, and verify that the pictures are still on the camera. If the photos are still on the camera, the photos are on the internal memory, in which case you can format the SD card as fat32 on your computer, and reinsert the card into the camera. If the photos are not on your camera after removing the SD card, then the pictures are on the SD card and you will need to have someone assist you further in extracting the photos.

How can I extract the pictures from the camera memory of my Canon 550D?

You can remove the SD memory card from the Canon camers and insert the SD memory card into an USB memory card reader. Connect the USB memory card reader into the USB port of the working computer. The computer will see this card reader as an external memory device, click on this device and open the folder that contains the photos and you can then copy the photos to your computer.

My playback mode is not working well. It will only play back pictures that were recently taken. Not ones that are filed for sometime.

I'm guessing that you never formatted your SD card in the card in the camera when you first got it. BUT DON'T DO SO JUST YET. The problem is going to get progressively worse unless you do the following: 1) backup the photos on your card by saving them to your computer. Recommend using a portable USB card reader to do so (see this link, and if you have problems seeing the files see this other link). 2) after saving your photos onto your computer, format the SD card in your camera using the camera's format feature. Look for it in the "tools" menu by selecting the option that states your card's memory capacity. Note that this will also erase your card, so again do so only after saving your photos onto your computer.

Our Canon G9 camera heated up, 2 orange lights started flahing and then stopped working. The memory card now can't be opened on other cameras we have tried. Can the memory card be fixed so we don't lose...

Doesn't sound good -- do you have a memory card reader (one of those little boxes) with about 10 slots for every type of memory card -- put the card into one of those and plus the mini USB into the PC.
OR
A printer like Epson 6000 series - that has a CARD slot for flash or SD.
OR
Take the Memory card into a shop to develop the photo's and ask then to make a CD ROM of the Photo's so you can decide which one to print later on.

How do you put video from your camcorder to your computer?

With a Canon ZR70MC camcorder, you can record video onto miniDV tape, or onto the SDmemory card in Card Camera mode.

To access video on the miniDV tape, you will use the DV cable (IEEE 1394 aka FireWire). Connecting this cable to your windows computer will allow you to transfer high quality video using the software supplied on the digital video solutions disc, or just about any other windows video editing software.

To access videos stored on the SD memory card, remove the card and place it in a card reader connected to your computer, or attach a usb cord to the camera and the computer. Video stored on the memory card is limited to 10 second clips @ 320x240 resolution.

I can not down load my Canon 5d Mark 11 camera images onto the computer. I get an error message of /parivate/var/tmp/folders.501/temporaryitems/photo/MG_6728.cr2 How do I get around this message?

Not a solution to this problem but a workaround would be to use a SD card reader(available in most desktop computer or laptops). Yo will have to take out the memory card(SD card) from the camera before doing this. Hope this helps.
