Dear kenarone,
May I ask you to install this software from Seagate to verify the status of your external hard drive:
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SeaTools&vgnextoid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD
Once tested, if there is no physical fault reported, the issue could be a corrupted Master File Table. If that is the case, may I ask you to try with a Recovery Tool like OnTrack Data Recovery Lite:
http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.co.uk/data-recovery-software/easyrecovery-lite/
If that does not allow you to recover any file, May I ask you to format the unit completely with this guide:

Regards,
Eddie Knight

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 that will not read my hard drives

Go into the CMOS of your computer and reset it for default values so that it reads any hard drive that you connect to computer. Make sure that the ribbon going to the drive is good as well as the power connector!

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

My book hard drive won't read

1. First try to use another usb cable. If it still won't work.
2. Try plugging it into another computer. If it still won't work.
3. Try removing the hard drive from your BOOK HARD DRIVE, and plugging it directly to your computers desktop SATA socket using a SATA cable. If it works, backup all the data of your BOOK HARD DRIVE and then delete the partition and make a new partition and then format it.

My WD My Passport external Hard Drive ! TB formatted for Mac is not reading my files

A Windows PC computer will not read files on the WD hard drive that has been formatted on a MAC.
The fix.
Copy your photos onto the MAC computer then remove the WD hard drive and connect it to your Windows PC and format the WD hard drive in FAT32 file system.
After formatting has been completed remove the WD hard disk and connect it to the MAC computer. The MAC can read and write to a Windows FAT32 formated hard disk. You can now copy the photos from the MAC to the WD hard disk. When copying is complete, remove the WD hard drive and connect the WD hard drive to your Windows PC and you can now copy the photo from the WD hard disk to your Windows PC.

My Iomega hard drive isn't working whenever I plug it in to my computer I hear a clicking noise but no response, meaning my computer or others are not reading it.

noise coming from a hard means that the hard drive is already have a problem and if it is not read by the computer it is already broken you must replace it.

I was able to use my Hitachi xl 1000 external hard drive on my computer and I wanted to be able to use it for my Macbook Pro as well but as soon as I used it for Time Machine Backup I wasn't able to use it...

If the MAC formats the external hard drive then the desktop cannot see any files on the hard disk even though it detects the external hard drive.
If you format the external hard drive using the Desktop computer and format it in FAT32 then the MAC can read and write to this hard drive and the desktop PC can also read and write to the external hard drive.
MAC computers can read and write on PC formatted disks but not the other way around.
