I have a Whirlpool side by side fridge, model GC3PHEXNS02. The icemaker stopped working one week ago. I just replaced the dual water inlet valves, but the icemaker is still not working. The infrared switch...

The general rule is to put 2/3 cup of water into icemaker , and if it dumps , but doesn't fill , replace the water inlet valve . If it doesn't dump , replace the icemaker Pt # 2198597 . Check the black fill tube above the icemaker fill cup , to see if it is clogged with ice . The fill line runs from the back of the refrig , between the liner and cabinet ( unaccessable ) , and down to the icemaker . Some of this model refrig , come with a coupling on the back , which you can disconnect and blow thru , to see if it is clear to the icemaker . If you do not have a coupling , you may want to aquire one Pt # 4211117 , in case this happens again , also , turn your freezer control down slightly , it will be a quick troubleshoot step . It sounds like the optics are ok , but I'll still give you the information .
Open the freezer door and if you get 2 pulses followed by a pause repeatedly , press in on the left side flapper door and the optic should stay on steadily . If you still get the 2 pulse and pause , then the optics are faulty . If you get no light , the icemaker is in the harvest mode ,( trying to dump ice ) . If the icemaker arm is in the normal position and no light , the optics are faulty . When the optics are faulty , replace both sides , the emiter board and reciever board . They come togather in a kit Pt # 4389102 .

My icemaker isn't working - the only thing that we've done is change the filter (at the bottom) which we've done many times before w/o issue. We have re-set the breaker, turned the icemaker off then on...

took the ice maker apart and found that a plastic piece that held one of the gears had broken...we had tried using a hair dryer (as suggested in some other research we had done) to see if the water tube was frozen...common fix it seemed with other folks, but not our issue. Also suggested to test the opticals - open door, hold down left side optical flap and check right side optical - if the light was off, the optical board(s) needed to be replaced, if the light stayed on, then the issue would be with the icemaker itself.

Fridge won't make ice

There is an optics test procedure you can perform on your own to confirm what the repairman says. Assuming you have a whirlpool-made Kenmore (if you have a Pur water filter at the bttom left of your unit, you do), see here:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf

Basically, the icemaker won't initiate a harvest (dump) cycle unless the electric eye through that cutout at the top of your icemaker can see across the top of the dispenser. If the lens is dirty, or if either the emitter or receiver boards are bad, the optics won't connect. There's a simple diagnosis procedure in that pdf above. Since your fridge is from 2005 like mine, refer to the "post 2002 redesign" optics procedure. Basically the test is to open the fridge and look at the LED, then to close the flapper on the left wall of the freezer and see the change in LED behavior. This can confirm or deny an optics issue. Also, if you remove the little plastic grille at the bottom of your fridge, there'll be a piece of paper folded and stuffed in there with the diagnostic procedure in it as well. To do the full diagnostic procedure, you'll need to remove the icemaker and install a jumper, but to debug optics only, all you need to do is open the door, close the flapper, or maybe push in the door switch and look at how the LED responds.

Whirlpool icemaker

Your unit has infered sensors on the frezzer left and right walls. There is a diagnostic test sheet brown in color in your kick plate. All you have to do is open frezzer door look on the right sensor it should blink twice followed by a 1-2 sec delay,if that is good press in flapper door on right sensor do not block path of infered beam you will not see a beam its invisable.Once you hold in flapper on right sensor the led should be solid. If solid optics are good if not solid led replace optic sensors

Icemaker doesn't work and it was working fine. What do I need to check.

Look at the "fill" tube that fills icemaker with water. If it is frozen, replace water valve located behind fridge in compressor department, hint: it is blue... If not frozen up, it may be the icemaker... It's either the icemaker or the water valve UNLESS your ice bucket is located in the door, then it could be the "optical" computer board eye that "see's" accross the ice bucket....

Some precautions before diagnosing the icemaker optics system since there are two different sets of emitter-receiver optics boards and therefore two entirely different procedures for emitter-receiver optics board diagnosis. This could get really tricky especially when the appropriate tech sheet isn’t handily available. To determine which optics diagnostic procedure should be employed, open the freezer door and observe the right side (mullion or partition side) LED status light. If the red LED is NOT flashing two repeating pulses, this usually indicates the older style emitter-receiver optics boards are used and its specific diagnosis procedure should be employed. But then again, this could also mean that the new optics system IS used but the icemaker just happens to be in the harvest mode - OR - the LED (optics receiver) has failed in some bizarre twist of fate. However, keeping the above cautions in mind, we can assume that normally the older emitter-receiver optics system will NOT have its red LED status light flashing each time the freezer door is opened, while the NEW style optics WILL have its red LED status light double pulsing at each door opening.

Not making ice

Reason Numero Uno: Frozen Fill Tube
These units have the fill tube in the freezer ceiling that can keep freezing up. The cure is to replace the existing fill tube with a new kit from Whirlpool, consisting of a modified fill tube and a fill tube heater. You can buy it here. This, of course, assumes the icemaker and level sensing circuitry are attempting to function normally. You can test the icemaker by manually initiating a harvest cycle. Do this by pulling the front cover off the icemaker and jumpering out test points T and H with an insulated wire. The other most common problem is bad optics circuit boards. Keep reading.
Reason Numero Duo: Bad Optics Circuit Boards
If the red status LED is not lit on your ice level sensor receiver (it’s the only LED in there, Hoss, so don’t go gettin’ all cross-eyed on me ’cause I’m using fancy words), then you may have bad optics circuits. Close the freezer door and wait five minutes, then open it back up. If still no status light, then you need to replace the optics boards, emitter and receiver. You can buy them here.

Hope that helps!
