I have TX-SR503 onkyo receiver. I want to connect a microphone to it so that I can do a karaoke. The unit does not have a socket for microphone. It has a socket for phones. This socket does not appear...

The reason that jack doesn't work for a microphone is because it's a headphone jack. It's meant to send a signal out to headphones, and it doesn't work as an input. If the receiver doesn't have a microphone input jack (and it would be clearly labeled as such), you'll need to connect your mike through the auxiliary input. You may be able to connect with nothing more than an adapter to switch from the plug on the end of the mike cable to the RCA jacks on your receiver. The output level on some mikes may be high enough to drive the auxiliary input as-is. More likely, though, the mike will need a little boost to make it work with the receiver. The receiver needs a "line-level" input, which is higher than the output of most good-quality mikes. To get the mike up to line level you'll need a microphone preamp. There are many types from many sources, at a wide range of prices. Here's one I have used as an example.

You might also want to look for a small mixer like this. The mixer would let you combine your mike and music source into a single line-level output you could run to the receiver, and use the receiver just for the amplifier function.

I cant get the surround sound to work after connecting the Samsung BluRay Player to my Onkyo reciever using a optical digital connection or directly with the HDMI cable ?

Hi

You will have to assign the optical input to the input you are using, so for instance if you have plugged the optical cable into opt 1 on the onkyo reciever and wish to use the DVD input on the onkyo reciever, you need to go into the set of the onkyo to digital assignments or in/out assignments, dependent on the model, and select OPT1 for the DVD input. You can find out how to exactly do this in the onkyo's manual under 'digital assignments' or 'input assignments'.

Iassume you mean you hear the buzz independently of the audio program - simply connecting the cable causes the buzz?

If tanything in the mix is powered from different AC sources you may have a different ground potential. Sometimes manipulating the orientation of one or more ac plugs will solve hum problems.

No audio from pc connected using hdmi

Are you not getting audio to the television speakers and the onkyo reciever speakers when connected HDMI thru the reciever or just the television. If it is just thru the television then it is because the reciever is grabbing the HDMI audio signal and converting it so it does not reach the TV. If it is both then try changing the HDMI signal output from PCM to DOLBY DIGITAL on the computer. Your reciever may not be able to process the PCM signal of the computer. Does the reciever show a PCM or DOBLY DIGITAL display when HDMI is hooked up to it?

as described in the owners manual, set the microphone at the primary listening position at ear level, prop it up somehow, a camera tripod works well, plug the mic into the receiver front port, near and under volume dial, and follow instruction on the receivers screen.
