Gas dryer starts ok. After the first cycle igniter comes on but flame does not. It only works ok again after dryer cools down again. What dryer part could be bad?

Intermittent heat in our GE electric dryer

Hello Makathi,
Your problem may be related to a few things.. Depending on the age and use of your dryer, your heating element may be on its way out ( meaning that the element itself is eroding to a point of it not getting hot enough and will eventually open and need replacement) but.. you could have other issues too that affect the dry time.. You need to verify that your exhaust system is free from lint and is NOT restricting air flow out. You could have something in the blower itself that restricts air flow. Those are the basic components associated with your system dry process. If I were there, the very first thing I would check is the exhaust path out of the dryer ( including the end diverter to make sure that isn't restricting flow) Since yours is an electric dryer, you could do a simple test indoors by detaching the exhaust line and running the dryer inside for a short time.. The byproduct of electric dryers isn't as dangerous as a gas system so its ok to run it that way to check the flow coming out of the dryer,... Chances are one of the things I mentioned will solve your problem.. I'll keep an eye out for your feedback.. Hope this helps you
Regards,
Rick

Kenmore gas/electric dryer

theordis:

When you say electrical power is working Ok ,I would assume you are saying this because the dryer is tumbling.
Which could mean you are only getting 120 volts to the unit but it will not heat with out 240 volts.

If you are getting 240 volts.
You could have an open thermostat, an open heating element. A bad timer contact or a open switch on the motor.

All these can be tested with a Volt-Ohm meter.

((((The Electrical supply must be turned off and at least one wire dissonnected from the component being tested.

No Heat - Electric LQC Test OK

Try and re-set your 220V breaker one time ,because your dryer will run 120V for the motor to run,and the other 120Vsupplies the electricity to heat the coil.Small chance it could be half the breaker is off.Second, if the advise above doesnt correct it than odds are its a bad igniter. Some dryers have a amall re-set on the high limit thermostsat
