Question about Dryers

1 Answer

I recently moved and my dryer has a 3 prong 240 volt plug. Three wire. I purchased a new plug because my new home outlet is a 4 prong female plug. How do I connect my 3 wire dryer to my 4 prong outlet. I have removed the cord from my dryer and it looks like there is not a connection for the 4th wire?

DO NOT DO THIS.

A 3 prong plug is L1 L2 and ground, a 4 pong plug has a neutral.
If you are backfeeding a dryer outlet it is dangerous. Generator N and G should be isolated unless it is a seperately derived source

DON'T DO IT!!! Get an electrician to install a 4 prong outlet for you. Your exposure is DEATH, be safe and get the correct outlet.
When some types of failures happen, you can charge the CASING of the washer. then you can become the connection to ground.
Get the correct outlet, return the three wire plug.

How do you connect the LG DLEX5101V Dryer to the electrical outlet on the wall if there is no cord to plug in?

There are a couple of types of plugs in homes - and the dryer manufacturer use this excuse to not ship a cord with the dryer - profiting that much more. You'll need to purchase a cord set for your dryer. Assuming you live in the U.S., that means you need a 30 amp 240 volt cord. That's easy enough, but it does get harder.

Most homes have an outlet that has three slots in it - like the one below:
steve_con_39.jpg
A 240 volt, 30 amp, 3 wire dryer plug.

New homes have a safer, 240 volt 30amp 4 wire plug. They look like the one below:
steve_con_40.jpg
A 240 volt, 30 amp, 4 wire dryer plug.

The code states that when a dryer is purchased it should be connected via a 4 wire cord. This means if you have the older, 3 wire outlet - it will have to be changed along with the entire length of cable between the electrical panel and the outlet (the new outlet needs a 4 wire cable - the older plug was supplied by a 3 wire cable).

Those are the rules. Many people opt to purchase the older 3 wire cords so that they can connect directly to the 3 wire outlet already installed in their home. As an electrician, I have to caution you on doing that. It is a violation of the electrical code as it has been identified as an unsafe condition. The code hopes to rectify this by slowly requiring new dryers to be wired with 4 wire cords and making the homeowner upgrade the old 3 wire outlet to a newer, safer 4 wire outlet. Of course, no one will come to see what you had and if you changed it, etc.

Mose hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. sell these cords for under $20. Make sure you choose a 30 amp dryer cord - and not the similar looking but thicker 50 amp stove or range cord.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply.

The dryer has a four prong male plug and the outlet is a three prong female - which do I change? the dryer cord is the easiest, but how do I connect the leads?

4 PRONG PLUG WIRING: 2 HOTS(RED&BLACK) 1 NEUTRAL(WHITE) 1 GROUND(GREEN). 3 PRONG PLUG WIRING: 2 HOTS&1 NEUTRAL. YOU MUST USE 2 HOTS & 1 NEUTRAL ON A 3 WIRE PLUG. THE GROUND WIRE(GREEN) WHICH IS HOOKED TO FRAME OF THE DRYER IS NOT USED ON OLDER 3 WIRE PLUGS. IT IS AN ADDITIONAL SAFTEY GROUND ON NEWER MODEL 4 WIRE PLUGS.

Dryer outlet does not have common wire.

You can replace the 4 prong with a three prog cord found at Lowes etc.

First, disconnect the black wire, one of the "hot" connections, from the left side post by removing the terminal screw. This is one-half of the 240-volt connection.
Next, disconnect the red wire, another of the "hot" connections, from the right side post by removing the terminal screw. This is the other half of the 240-volt connection.
Then, disconnect the white wire from the center connection. It is used for the neutral connection.
Now, disconnect the green wire from the machine case by unscrewing the green screw.
The next step is critical to return your electrical connection to factory condition before installng the 3-prong cord! Locate the white machine wire that is now connected to the neutral (center) screw terminal. Disconnect it from there and install it under the green ground screw.Connect the outer two wires (hot wires) to the outer two screws, obviously, one on each screw.
Now connect the center wire (neutral) to the center post. You'll notice the white machine wire is now the case ground connection, unlike the 4-prong cord connection in which the green wire from the cord makes the ground connection.

New house requires 4 prong plug for dryer...mine has 3...bought new cord...How to wire it?

The old three prong, the vertical prong is neutral (white wire), the two slanted are 220 volts. The new plug, the extra prong is ground (bare wire). Shut off the outlet at the breaker panel, and remove the outlet to examine the wiring to it. It should be as above--the 220 volt wires are red and black or black and black. The ground wire is bare or green insulated. Inside the dryer case, tie the green and white wires to the dryer case, and tie the two outside wires where they went with the old cord. Check with an electrician if you are unsure about this.

Change fr 3 prongs to 4

They wire in the same except the green wire will go to a ground screw which should be right in the same area with a green color to it. If no ground screw, hook the green together with the white (center) wire. Hope this helps!
