Remove lens, CF card, and battery. Leave in a dry and slightly warm place for 24 hours. Clean lens contacts with a cloth or cue tip and eclipse/alcohol.
If the camera doesn't turn on after this, even without CF card and lens attached, then it needs to go to a Canon service centre. Don't tell them you got it wet, and maybe it will get repaired FOC.

My Canon 40D suddenly came down with the dreaded Error 99 for no apparent reason. I have tried all the usual, battery, memory card, lens, but no luck. Even on the bulb setting the shutter won't stay open....

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thanks

HI I have a cannon eos digital SLR. When I try to take a picture error 99 appears on the screen. I do not know how to correct it. Will I have to send it back to the cannon company? Is there someway I can...

Error 99 and believe me I've been there is Canon's catch all error code cause if the camera can't figure out what's wrong it goes to Error 99. Canon doesn't release any information directly towards error 99 due to several different causes. That was the bad news. The good news or at least the better news is that most of the time error 99 is caused by dirty contacts between the camera and lens. At least this is the problem I'll address in this solution.
You will need a new pencil with a red rubber eraser, make sure the camera is turned off, remove the lens from your camera and put a body cap on. If you do not have a body cap lay the camera lens mount face down on a clean lint free surface. Take the lens and hold as vertical as possible with the rear lens element facing down and turn the lens body so you can see the gold contacts. Use the red rubber eraser to gently clean the contacts. Make sure they are clean and all rubber dust is removed from the lens and contacts. on the lens you may use a little puffer/blower or a lens cloth not a tissue. Do not use a liquid cleaner. Once you have finished the cleaning of these contacts either put a rear lens cap on or set the lens where it is not going to get knocked over sitting on a clean dust free surface with the contacts down. Now take the camera and as much as possible keep the lens cavity pointing down to eliminate any rubber dust from entering the camera, clean the contacts again gently with the rubber eraser clear the dust with a lens cloth not a tissue DO NOT use a puffer/blower at this point because it will only blow the dirt into the camera. Once you are satisfied that area is clean reinstall the lens make sure it's locked and turn on the camera. You should be "Good to go". Well lets hope so anyway. Error 99 can also be a problem with third party lenses like Tamron, Sigma, Tokina not having the up to date electronics to match your camera properly Error 99 can also be caused by requiring a camera firmware update but for now lets just go with cleaning the lens to camera contacts.

My cannon rebel eos DS6041 displays error 99 when

'Error 99' indicates some problem with the AF contacts. This is a common error in Canon lenses. It could indicate a very simple problem like dirty contacts or a much serious one like the breakage of USM cable.
As a first step, you can try cleaning the lens and body contacts (the metal contacts between the lens and body) using a pencil eraser. Be careful to hold the body facing down so that no dust falls inside. After cleaning both the lens and the body contacts, re-attach the lens and try shooting. If the AF does not work still, you need to take the lens to an authorized service center.

the lens contacts are dirty - get a pencil with an eraser on the end, just a regular old pencil with a red rubber eraser. Detach the lens from the camera, hold it so that the lens’ gold contacts are pointing down and lightly erase their exposed surface, cleaning them of any hand oil that might have gotten on them. Do the same thing with the gold contacts inside the camera body. This is a bit harder but it’s doable: just hold camera so lens opening points down so no gunk falls in. Erase lightly. I've used a lens cloth and dabbed at the contacts rather than blow them so as not to blow the erasings inside the camera.
Works well for me....let me know how you fair!

Error 99 in body

Hi
If you have tried different cards, batteries etc. try cleaning the contacts.

1. Get a pencil with a rubber on it.
2. Take of the lens of the camera and clean the little connectors buy using the rubber on the end of the pencil, brush of with a camera brush. Be gentle and try not to brush dust etc into the camera body.
3. Do the same with all the connectors on all the lenses you have. Do the same to the connectors on your battery.

If this has not helped and you have indeed tried new cards and different batteries you will need to take it into a Canon dealer.

Hope that helps.
